I love my car ( 82 400i ), the smells, sounds, and the fact that it does not need a specialist for most repairs. All of this brings me to my question; would you give up your car for a new Ferrari? Or would you be as happy with a newer Ferrari?

No, I'd keep my 1980 400i; I've always wanted one - I could have bought a more expensive Ferrari, but chose not to. I love the design, the V12 engine, the sound, its discrete presence.

Of the newer cars, I would love a 456M GT. Maybe when the prices stabilize...

    1) Amen to that!
    2) I just came across a Car & Driver mag. (Jan/'95) the other day & was surprised of the comparison of the 456GT to the 512TR...

Price as tested, 0-60/1/4 mi (sec), top end (mph), braking (70-0 mph), skidpad (300 ft.)

    456GT(11/93)--- $225,500., 4.8/13.3, 192, 170, .89g
    512TR(8/92)---- $212.160., 5.0/13.0, 187, 169, .92g

What performance, huh? And at about $70k, their value may come down a little as time goes on, the majority of their depreciation has passed, to jump on a low mileage one now would be worth it. Still not used to the more modern bubble shapes though, love those classic 70's & 80's lines.

I'm also slightly considering a 456......I prefer the hood scoops on the pre-Modificato cars, but prefer the interior and updates on the Modificato cars. But no matter if you get an OBDI or OBDII 456 or a 456M, you still have those silly frameless windows.

...and they are problematic on the 456....so make sure if you look at one, that the windows were fixed and fixed PROPERLY. I've heard it's an insanely expensive and time consuming fix.

But I agree...the 400 has those classic, crisp lines. The 456 is a beautiful car though.

I really like the 550, a friend had one with Daytona style seats ( with the brass rings) and retro colors and luggage straps, wonderful car. but I really am put off with the dealer only services issue on new cars sense I really like working on mine. So my cut off usally is 1973 and older on cars, but sense Ferrari is some times slow to adopt new tech. (Carbs till 1979, CIS Fuel injection) I can buy into the early 80's with Ferrari.

I really like the 550/575 as well.....but I really want a 4-seater. Can't leave my little girls out while enjoying Ferrari-magic you know. :)
