The focus on Ferraris has always been about the cars, which is probably how it should be. But, I'm wondering, if maybe, we should focus on the buyers. After all, if no one had brought these cars, we would not be having this discussion, would we?

Let's call the first group of buyers the Jet Set.

Most of you are too young to remember when flying was a big deal. The early Ferrari buyer were movie stars and rich industrialists.

The next group I call the Bohemian buyers. Ferrari quit road racing in 1964, or was it 1965?

From 1965 to say maybe 1985? Nobody gave a **** about these old pieces of junk. In the United States, there was maybe 500? Maybe 1,000 people who knew about these cars?

After the Bohemians, there came the speculators. That period between 1986 and 1992, when the smart ones brought and sold.

Poseurs? ;) Or maybe “investors.” Probably a little of both, depending upon what they were buying.

texas, you forgot the enthusiast and fans.
I for example only have kown in 1974 when I bought mine from a junk yard dismanteled that ferrari is a company building race cars, but the 250 GT/T is for sure no race car ( a 4 seater ) later I got a little knowledge about the ferrari factory. but with only 19 years I have been a proud ferrari owner and happy that I did so at that time. even I payed at the junk yard 6 times more for the parts ( some missing ) then I earned each month

I would put you with the Bohemian group. They were enthusiasts when nobody cared. They brought these cars because they knew what they were, not to make money. That came later with the speculators.

One historical note: the Japanese were some of the initial drivers of the speculation phase. There were China in the '80s. Or maybe China is the Japan of the 2000s.

Remember those who brought F-40s and put them in climate controlled garages as investments?

Compare this group to those who bought F348s and F355s and drove them.

Then there are the <1,000 mile Boxster Spyders on BAT. Seems like there’s one per week. Having owned a Boxster RS60 I can’t imagine not driving those things.

I've never understood the notion of investing in cars. I like to drive em, not look at em.

Sorry about that. To me, Bohemians are hip. They appreciate cool things without being concerned about making money. They are true enthusiasts. Hemingway during his Paris years was a Bohemian. But I can see where the term is not clear. Maybe it would be better to call the 1965 to 1985 period as the Enthusiasts Era.

Texas: I think the choice of the word "Enthusiast" is better. That is what we all were. Luckily, some of us were able to hang on to the cars. We bought our 275 GTB in 1972 for $6,300. We could have made a better choice, as it was a "rat", but we banned together, shared knowledge, saved money, worked on it, fixed the problems over the years and now we still enjoy it 51 years later.

A European would probably be inclined to take the term literally.

Yes, Enthusiast works better for me as well. I was trying to figure out how I was going tell the.Admiral he was a Bohemian in 1960.

Hey Dale, now wait a minute this is a family site! I much prefer Dyke's choice of terms, or better yet "gear head".

Sorry to say , but the Admiral was a bohemian in 1960. He had good personal taste , ahead of his time, did not respect conventions too much and had not too much money either. This is the essence of the book “ la vie de bohème “ and subsequent opera “ la bohème”. Nothing to do with Bohemia, the Czech province Bohème Moravia, nor the kind of pejorative connotation associated with bohemian. And I admire the Admiral for being at the same time very conventional , and not at all for some other aspects of his life. In a way , unless you are a billionaire and you collect cars as a rational choice - and we all know some of them- all of the others who put priorities in a reverse order and Ferrari on top of the pile ,,are bohemians. They refused the established order and conventions. And chose their passion for the cars! And I am a proud bohemian!

My friends and I all wore beret's to high school, just to be different. I was a bohemian and did not realize it! I just thought I was nuts about Ferraris.
