I'm looking for an expat bar in Paris where I might catch Sunday's race. Any suggestions? And no I can't drive down. I'm on an annaversary trip so there's no wife dumping.
Umm, I would try the great Canadian bar on the quai des Augustines... they normally do football, they may get the race on for you. there is an irish bar on the right bank across from the Louver - its blue on the outside - forget the name... they may help. there is always hard rock cafe...
David, You are not going to lock yourself inside a bar to watch the Monaco Grand Prix, when we have at least the first decent weather in three months? Look outside your window today, there is sun and 29° centigrades. (only kidding...) Hope you enjoy your stay here; best,
We've been enjoying it but have booked a table at the Renault Cafe for the race. Paris is wonderful. David
Anything to do with La Regie? Or just a coincidence? If the former, they should have a slew of newly named dishes - Isobel is much better than me, but; - The Heikki smoked <whatever> - The great seizure burger - The Lock up sandwich - etc. Glad you two are enjoying Paris in the springtime Cheers, Ian
And a fine tip it seems too! To save others, yes, it's very definitely "affiliated" with La Regie - Looks like a great place to watch, although I suspect the commentary will be in French! Cheers, Ian
Googling turned up a pretty funny Eddie Izzard skit; "Ou est la plume de ma tante?" [With apologies to Is & nerofer for no doubt mangling the language horribly ] Cheers, Ian
Since you mentioned that Eddie Izzard bit, there's a great story that goes with it. Izzard booked three weeks of stand-up in Paris. Starting off with his well-below-basic French, he worked with his audiences to improve his command of the language night by night. By the end of the run, he was doing his whole routine in French. Apparently he was selling out the theatre after the first few performances and later there were quite a few people who came every night. I can also highly recommended his bit about the Daleks...
No offense, Ian; I know it's not the easiest of languages to learn. I'm just happy to read that David is enjoying his stay. Luck seems to be on his side with the weather, even if May is usually one of the best months to visit Paris, with September. The two middle weeks of August are usually very calm, all Parisians having left the town, but the weather can be quite hot, and you can experience a feeling of not enough fresh air. I just hope that my fellow countrymen are not, well, let's say, too "french" with David (arrogant, mainly; but also slow service in restaurants, high prices, etc...) If he watch the G.P on the national channel, he will have the benefit of a running commentary by no other than Jacques Laffite, always enthusistic at 69 years, as a young man. Meanwhile, I am experiencing a slump in my Formula One motivation, having lost interest n the Bernie's lottery with tires, making any race indecipherable. Ah, "a" is in the lead, but this doesn't mean a thing because he desn't have the right tires, etc... Shall not watch Monaco G.P on T.V; didn't watch Bahrein, nor Spain for that matter (took my 328 GTB out for a spin instead). Decided to restrict myself to Montreal, Spa, Monza and Suzuka for this year. Shall read the results of the other races in the newspaper, just like I did back in 1970, when I was ten... Best,
Very cool! I didn't know that. Thanks! +1 You may not like his stage persona, but he is one *funny* mother****er! Cheers, Ian
Unfortunately, while the teachers tried, I was an arrogant English kid at the time..... +1 He blew off leaving early and heading to the 'Ring, then blew off a quick drive down South for the weekend! A truly dedicated & devoted husband it seems! Tip in the American tradition and all is well IME! I have a feeling that Jacques in French probably beats our US guys in English!.... That's a shame!..... I've said before, tyres are the one area where the Pygmy really doesn't have any say - The teams (via the TWG) tell Pirelli what they want, and Pirelli delivers. "Same for all!" FWIW, here's Hembery on them not running in Q3; Don't blame Pirelli or even Bernie...... Cheers, Ian http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99766
We are enjoying it immensely. Our traveling weather luck has always been good, even in Scotland. Everyone we've met has been most gracious and polite. The reputation is unfounded as far as we can tell. I share your aversion to the current state of F1 but it still sucks me in ala Godfather III It will be fun to finally watch a race with other fans. No matter who they root for or in what language. David
Nice to read that your are enjoying your stay, David... A small Post-Scriptum, should you not already knew it: as for TV: - Eurosport is broadcasting all the practice sessions for the Grand Prix "live" (next one on Saturday, at 11:00) and the qualifications at 14:00. Should you be staying in an hotel, usually you should have access to Eurosport. - The national chanel ("TF1") will broadcast the qualifications again at 01:50 in the Sturday to Sunday night... As for the current Formula 1, I'm so confused by this comedia that I am even not able to answer my wife when she asks me "by the way, who is leading?"... Best
Well...a bit less fantastic when you are living, and working here; but I am glad you are enjoying it. Weather should be fine at least until Monday. Best,
