Didnt Enzo Ferrari always say that a proper Ferrari is a FRONT engined V-12? I think its an interesting statement as for the companies 40th anni. they produced a MID engined Twin Turbo V-8. It become an automotive icon, but I have always thought it was slightly ironic. Anyone with me on this?

Enzo's precise saying was "the horse should always pull the cart" however I feel after the immense success acheived with mid engined layouts in both F1 and Sportcars he began to rethink his idea on this...

The F40 was the last Ferrari that Enzo himself had a hand in designing. He said it was his favorite road car since the Daytona

Enzo Ferari - " I have principles. If you don't like them, I have others..."

Enzo cared only about winning races. If that meant going rear engined, mid engined, rocket engined - whatever it took, he was for. His road cars were never anything more than a means to financing his racing activities. I don't think you can put too much store into something Enzo may have said at some isolated point in time.

You have to remember what was happening in ~1985 when the F40 was being designed------MONSTER Turbocharged F1 and Group C Le Mans cars were dominating the racing world, and Porsche turbo 911s on the street and in various racing configs were highly formidable as well. Turbocharging was very highly desired at that time (still is by enthusiasts), as were mid engine designs, front engine exotics were considered outdated by many.

I think the F40 was the pinnacle of '80s super exotics.

Ah yes, I loved the Group C cars! They were getting WAY too fast near the end, they were too good to last. It does seem like LM-type racing has gone backwards a bit since those glory days, in outright speed, excitement and also sex appeal, eh?

You are wrong. He only brought on new technology when he would get his arse handed to him by other teams that were not afraid to try the new technology. And even then, it sometimes still took him years to allow the technology to be used in his cars.
