Over the last several months, I have done an extensive search for the perfect for me, Ferrari. During that time I noticed that a number of cars had mismatched paint. At first, I thought that many of these cars had been painted. However, as I continued on with my search it seems to me that I was hearing the same story over and over again: Ferrari paint is widely variable and the hues or shades are often different on different parts of the car.

The 575 M that I bought is no different. There are subtle shade differences in some of the bodywork. I had two Ferrari mechanics take a look at the car prior to purchase. We went over the car and other cars with the paint meter. The result was that there were a lot of differences in the various levels of paint depending on where you put the meter and that there was no obvious evidence of any Accident or respray. It is still a possibility but if there was some sort of damage it was likely something minor like a rock chip or a scratch as there was no evidence anywhere that the car had been painted.

With that being said, I was wondering if others had encountered the same issues? I was also wondering what remedy you may have used to fix this disparity in shade or color? Or, did you just let things stay as they were and except the flaw as is?

After reading your post, I had to go and check. No problem here. Have a -04 575. Not only visually an exact match, but the surface structure is the same.
I wonder if some parts of the body like the front and rear lid, doors and front wings were painted before final assembly?
Taz has the answer I am sure!

Looking forward to hear what he has to say and others. Everything about these cars is a learning experience. So far it's been a lot of fun.

wildly various paint meter readings can indicate resprays. Dont know where you tried the readings? Front bumpers get resprays often, the dealer could have corrected a couple panels off the boat, tons of possibilities. I once had a sales guy at a high end place in Naples Fl tell me that they routinely respary portions of the car if there are rock chips (bumpers, rear quarter panels in front of the rear wheels, etc). I found that interesting because so many here talk about how they wouldn't touch a car with "paint work" when many don't even now it happened.

As most of us that own 550/575's they are over 10 years old, and had multiple owners, the chance is pretty big they had a bit of paintwork done.
Of course, when you buy they usualy claim it never had any.....

Yes. Makes sense. We will see. They will be doing a paint detail on the car for exterior and I think it'll take care of my concerns.

Ferrari paint jobs are notorious for having several issues. Varying thickness, swirls, peel, mismatch on panels, buffing trails and what not. Do a search around here, plenty of talk about new cars with panels not matching. Also, ask any detailer and they will all tell you tha varying thickness and all the other stuff is as common as it gets. I doubt many other manufactures do paintjobs like Ferrari and get away with it.

As the paint on my 575 is almost as perfect as on a previously owned 993, does it mean it had a really good re spray?
    :)

The 993 had the best paint of all the cars I have owned.

Lots of variance IS the standard with most Ferraris, although they have gotten better over time.
