    That green A6-1500 is stunning!

Walter, are you sure that the green A6-1500 is s/n 089? If so, that is a very important car with period race history. What more do you know about the car and its owners. I need to really dig deep but somewhere I have the cancelled registration documents stating that 089 was scrapped after a road accident circa 1953. Also, Frank Mandarano offered for sale or was selling for the owner at one time the engine block and some other engine parts for 089. I think Paul Merrigan may have ended up with some of the pieces Frank had for sale.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I doubt that this car is #089, one of just five A6 1500s fitted with triple carbs and other sporting mods. The true s/n should be easy to determine, however, as this car was restored not long ago at the Candini workshop in Modena.

Below are other photos of the car taken from the workshop's website at http://www.candinimodena.net/gallery.htm. A single-carburetor engine and back seat are clearly visible, both indications that this is not one of the five.

There are other photos on Candini's webpages of two single-cam A6 engines fitted with triple carbs of different configurations, at least one of which I would presume to be a retrofit. Surely Candini would not have installed a single-carb engine if this car was truly #089.

My guess is that this is either #080, 081 or 082.

PS - Too bad that they removed the trafficators. Also the upholstery does not seem to follow original patterns. But the engine compartment sure looks nice.

Terrific photo, Niklas. It is indeed #052, apparently the only Zagato. Restored around 2001, but reportedly many details were simplified. Source of photos is unknown to me.

    Don,
on the middle-photo you see the 200S/250S #2409 when it was owned by Corrado Cuppelini in the mid-90ies! So, the car was in Italy in the 90ies ...and until today (see my previous post on this thread!).

I like the green A6-1500. Lots of updates / changed features but most of the surviving example have gotten these over the years. Not so sure but the car may have taken on the identity of 089 sometime around 1953. Possibly as a tax savings replacement after a road / racing accident. Does anyone have actual access to this car to confirm the chassis number, how it is stamped and where it is stamped? Is the engine alloy or magnesium block? How and where are the engine numbers stamped?

If it is 089 as originally built, I believe it to be one of the few A6-1500s built primarily for racing and one with some early race history. I used to keep card files before computer days but having an impossible time finding my early post-war and pre-war Maserati stuff at the moment.

I love the mysteries that surround some of these magnificent machines! Many thanks to all who continue to contribute.

    Cheers,

    Bill

Also, 086 was originally painted light gray which was rare for the limited production run of these cars. Is the driver a woman wearing a scarf around her head???

Bill, I wish your hunch was right. But I just happen to have a registry stating that on 3 March 1954, #070 was registered to Franco Croci, retaining the registration Roma 181021. Later that year he drove it with Isa Pola under race number 84 in the Rallye Autom. del Cinema, taking 54th overall.

The registry also states that #070 was "cancell' d'ufficio" as of 1989. Perhaps still somewhere in Rome looking like Niklas' photo ?

The only anomaly is that in the original delivery records compiled by E. Hofer and printed in Vol 5, No 2 of Viale Ciro Menotti, the color is listed as "dark". Maybe a repaint after four years ?

Many thanks for the photo, Boudewijn. I agree with Bill, great fun.

And here's a photo of Isabella Quarantotti de Filippo, without scarf.

PS - She became de Filippo after divorcing Ippolito, with Alec Smith in between

According to my records, s/n070 was completed on April 8, 1950 and sold new to SILP (Stabilimenti Industriale Laloraz Piombo) -Firenze, I.
Does your registration papers state any prior registration from that city?

This is s/n067 in the movie "Domenica d`Agosto“ (1950), directed by Luciano Emmer. I like this atmosphere of Italy in that period.
The car at that time was owned by Carla Cavanna. She was from Genoa but had the car always registered on Roman-plates. Anybody more infos about her in connection to this movie?

Walter, what I see is that #070 was completed sometime in 1949, given an "anno fabbricaz." of 1950 and first sold on the date you mention to Stabilimento Industriale Lavorazione Piombo under an FI?????? plate. Around May 1952 it was changed to plate Roma163???, and then on 19 June 1953 to plate Roma181021. In Rome one owner (perhaps not the first) was Mario Perri di Gaetano, then on 3 March 1954 to Croci.

    ...in 1981!

    New to Guislio Sorgato -Milan/I

Much later the car belonged for many years to the collection of Alberto Riverbi, the Swiss Maserati importer. Original color was green. Riverbi let it restored and repainted in the typical "Amaranto"It was sold on May 1, 1999 in an auction in Toffen/CH.

Hi Walter, you might want to check this against Hofer's Record of Original Delivery, which indicates #064 sold new to Luigi Bressani in Milano on 1 August 1949, color Amaranth (through dealer Franco Cortese). Sorgati purchased #065.

This car was then in California during the '70s and '80s. The '81 photo was taken after acquisition by David Paynter, who traded a Ferrari 250 GTE plus cash for it.

#064 was among various Maseratis sold by Simon Kidston at Bonhams & Brooks' Monaco auction in May 2001 (officially it was NS at Toffen in '99), price FF 1,005,000 including buyer's premium. Photos attached here are from the catalog.

Issues I see are: color is more red than Amaranth; dash should be exterior color; upholstery pattern is not original; trafficators removed (and signal lights added); and Pininfarina badges missing. The front bumper and chromed rims are anomalous, but seem to match a very early photo of the car.

Walter, sorry to seem like your nemesis but Carla Cavanna Ceranesi acquired #067 on 9 February 1950 and re-registered it in Genova under GE48???. While registered under MO20060 (and filmed in the movie) the car was owned by Alessandro Bonacini of Modena, the original purchaser.

Don, correct! Bonacini purchased the car on 15. Jan 1949 and paid 1,700,000 Lira for it!

In May 1961 it was registered with its 3rd owner Giorgio Legnailoi in Florence, Italy.
