    Hello Fellow "F"-chatters,

Rather than sorting through the archieves on Alternator R/R, I was wondering if anyone could answer a small question regarding the electrical harness removal?

Is is it easier to remove from the starter? Looks like just '2'wires-the main wire "red" and the other to a small clip? Am I right. Or is there an easier way for removal?

Oh, this concerns an 79 308GTB.

    Thank you, Chris.

Once you've got the alternator loose, it's easy to turn it around & remove the heavy wire & the clip-on wire for the charge indicator.

Thank you for the reply, Verrell.

Are you speaking of the backside of the Alternator? Reason I ask is because it looks as if I have some type of metal shield over the back that my have to be removed.

    Thabk you very much,

    Chris.

One (the thicker one) is bolted on. The smaller wire is just clipped on.

yes- there is a shield on the back (see photo). Does your alt look like this? You might be able to get the wires off without removing the shied- but it's not too difficult to remove- three nuts. The length of the wires allow you too rotate the alt. around once it's removed from the block, although it's quite tight in there.

Also- there is a insulating, reddish colored, v-shaped shield that is around the larger bolted wire connection at the alternator that is very brittle. Be careful when detaching it, but especially when reattaching the wire. Mine broke, but it seems to be o.k. without it.

    Good luck

Can't seem to navigate this alternator on of the tight spot of the 79 308. The
shield directly under the crank pully is in the way.

Question: If I remove the shield that's help on by '2' nuts, will I risk an engine leak. It looks as if the nuts are actually holding (with sealant) '2' pieces of engine cases together.

    Please advise, thank you!

No, no leaks. I think you need to move the exhaust heat shield to get access.

I found it easier to remove the alternator harness from the starter end, then you don't need to remove the shield on the back of the alternator.

    good luck.
