The setting: a nice sunny Saturday afternoon in Connecticut. A perfect time to take the 400i out for a 1 hour "long way" trip to pick up one of my daughters from a playdate across town.

The first encounter: Sitting at a traffic light on the Darien/New Canaan border, I see a red 360 Coupe coming from the other direction. I flash my driving lights across the intersection, no response. As the light turns green we both start moving and I give a couple of toots with the horn and a wave as we pass each other, no response. He has the windows up and a hand with a cell phone glued to his ear, oblivious to his surroundings and his car.

The second encounter: I'm stopped at the end of the Merritt Parkway exit ramp waiting to head north on North Street in Greenwich (You're allowed to go south if you wish but its still called North Street) when I see a yellow 328GTS with two thin stripes angling off of the front fender and the top off. I pull out behind him and he immediately notices. As soon as the SUV in front of him turns off, we have a clear road and he nails it. I mean really nails it. I do likewise but I am having a hard time catching him, not to mention that I have never gone that fast on that road before and I'm always a bit cautious about going too fast on two lane country roads because of the surprise bicyclist or whatever factor.

We continue north through Banksville and into New York State, going slowly through the small town center there. On the other side of Banksville, it is back to a very "brisk" drive up through the terrific winding country road with no traffic to speak of. He is driving fast but obviously knows the road better than I and he slows where sanity says that you should. Other times our engines and suspensions are working and having fun. It's exhilirating!

At the intersection with Route 22 in Bedford Hills we stop for the light and he signals that he is going left. I need to go right so I can get back in time to pick up my daughter. As we take off in our different directions, I give a toot and a wave and he does likewise.

Now which of those two Ferrari drivers do YOU think was enjoying his car more yesterday?

    John

The guy with the 360 was more concerned with the look of his blow dry, gold chain and which valet spot HE deserves. 328 guy wins

Lol. If you've ever tried to use a cell phone in a 328 at 5000rpm you'll know it's like having a book club meeting at a Stones concert.

    (good post!)

    John,
Unfortunatly Greenwich and the whole area down there is all about money. People there buy Ferraris just to be flashy and "fit in" with everyone else. There are some true enthusiasts who love sharing their passion with others and running into them is always an enjoyable experience. I'm glad you had a fun drive on those amazing back roads :)

Typical 360 owner vs the typical 308/328 owner. One is in it for fun, the other is in it because his friends are.

not that i'm sticking up for the 360 guy, but we don't know a thing about him. he could have put his phone down and put you to shame just after you passed him. no way to judge. sounds like a bad post from someone with an agenda. but i wouldn't want to jump to conclusions.

    John,

You drove right by my house (on Greenwich Rd. between Banksville & Rt 22 in Bedford).

I drive that loop in my 308 weekly - great fun! Next time you're going to be in the area, let me know, and I'll listen for that V12...

    To Alan:

Great spot to live, makes even a drive to the grocery store fun from the first mile! I'm sure that we were driving like (cough!) good citizens when we went by YOUR house!

    To Hutch:

Let me know when you come back up this way and we'll get together with JB. PS I didn't see your girlfriend from last year's Greenwich Concours this year. ;-)

    John

PS I don't know that the 360 driver wasn't having fun, its just that he could have been driving a Camry for all of his apparent involvement with the car at the time. Maybe he was booking a track day at Lime Rock. Or maybe not!

Maybe the 360 is his daily driver? Is there something wrong with that, or with talking on the phone while trying to get somewhere in your Ferrari?

No thats great if so but I would hope he'd also open up regularly as well. Not a big fan of talking on cell phones while driving its not safe and it takes away from driving.
