I'm so lucky. I have never had an engine failure....at least all at once. had an engine go away slowly and I caught on to what was happening and grounded myself. Sorry to hear about Penhall. I saw my instructor have engine failure on take off with a student. he always yelled at me to always go straight ahead put the nose down and stay in controll of the airplane. What did he do with the student? He put the nose down .....STRAIGHT down and did a spiral dive to 180 degrees from take off heading. Made a perfect three pointer then he hit the only stump left on the field. It was hidden in the tall grass. When we got to the wreck he was yelling at the student, " Don't you ever do what I just did, always go straight ahead ! At the time , he had been flying for 14 years and had 14 forced landings. Of course, this was when engines quit a lot.
Good luck and fun in Reno. By the way, is Bill Hickle associated with Rare Bear ? I thought I saw his picture on the tube last year.

Hi Bob. Dont know Bill Hickle , but we hang around with 'our group' of 4 or 5 airplanes. The Chino Kids and the t-33 start jet and Spam Can...Steve and John Hinton. Darryl Bond with the TF mustang, Lady Jo and Art and Dan Vance with their OD mustang the 'ace of spades'. Both comprise the Santa Rosa crew. Tom Camp and the Grumman FM-2 Wildcat, and a whole bunch of friends that we all have known for the past 30 years that have been involved with airplanes and airshows. Even Paul Poberzeny from the EAA hangs out with us. Its the best week of the year for me. For eng failures....Dan Vance checking out a new 51 driver in Lady Jo at Santa Rosa had a massive engine failure on climb out at 700 ft. Dumped the nose and pulled off a 'turn back' and made it. Cool pilot. We call him 'turn back' to this day. Lady Jo on our wing at Reno a few years ago. ss

The incredible sound of inlines and round engines all clumped up going around a pylon on the first lap....undescribable. Never forget the sweet racket.

Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy. A number of good candidates for that one. A P47 comes to mind.

Third place! Wish I was there!

B-25 is the absolute coolest bomber out there. Love to have one fly, but a little more airworthy. Besides I already have a project....why its nearing completion even as we speak. Like to join me on the test hop.......?

Take a tip from the guys in Greenland and their B-29 debacle: ALWAYS tie down the auziliary Coleman generator in the rear of the fuselage before you attempt take off.

And when you get that clunker air worthy, I know where an F9F is located in a boy scout camp. (or at least it was there 25 years ago and I think it's still there. Just toss in a flamethrower and pour on the coal. A quick weekend project.)

That thing with four nacelles is not a B-25. It appears to be a DC-6 or-7 that has some sort of antenna on the right side of the fuselage. BOY would I like to sink my teeth into that P-40 that Steve showed pictures of ! My late brother-in-law flew B-25's and Martin B-26's in New Guinea during WW2. He said that the B-25 was an excellent and good airplane but more of a Sunday afternoon driver. The B-26 was his favorite. Fast, tough, and almost always got back when it was shot up.

Good guess. I thought the same thing but it looks to be a Lockheed P-3 Orion submarine hunter (hence the antennas). Based on a Lockheed L188 Electra airliner it went into service in 1962. It uses T-56 turboprops. I can hear them a long ways off. The last came off the production line in 1990. Howz that for a long production run?.

Below is the Canadian version, CP-140 Aurora and the second picture is one over Whidbey NAS with some A6's. The last is from the Netherlands

A few more 05 Reno pix. The guy with his foot on the tire is WWII tripple Ace Bud anderson. Chuck Yeager was his wingman. He flew in this year pioliting Jack Roush's biz-jet and they both crewed for Jimmie Lewards P-51 racer, Clowd Dancer. Bud is 84 and frequently flys one of Roushs Mustangs. Cool guy. Steve Hinton took my son Brant for a ride in the start jet T-33.

Thanks for the pictures Steve. I would be walking around with my head on constant swivel in that place.

I'll take that black plane with the bent wings..........I know, two engines, twice the headaches. How did it do?

Awsome machine. Two P&W R-2800s dragging that beautiful Grumman F-7F around the pylons at 370mph. What a roar...wind and exhaust...makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up every time it goes by. Wish I had taken more pix of it. Mike actually bumped up to the silver race with it. More than likely finished sixth ot seventh. Shirts on their way. Pix of family and buds. Feel good 2 b back at work?

I remember seeing a shirt that said, "Real engines are round" underlined with a large puddle of oil. Too funny. The noise of the F-7F must have been awesome.

I won't be going back to work for another week, a few loose ends to tie up.

Got the shirts today! They are fabulous! Thank you very much. My dad will flip! The jelly beans are tasty too I might add.

Have you had the mistress out for a run since you've been back?

It seems that the Castrol Super Clean Tire Gloss has been discontinued, at least in my neck of the woods. After going through every available type of gloss at three different parts stores, the only one that does not have petroleum distillates in it is the Michelin Tire Shine. Leaves the tires with a satin finish, not shiny. Pretty runny stuff so it has to be applied with a cloth, better control that way anyway.

Waz up DJ....as a mater of fact I just got back from a short run and pic was taken during cool down. Got a piece of 4th gear syncro....damn, I hate that when that happens. Club footed moron. Should be driving a D-7 Cat, not a TR. Have been using Griots tire junk. Satin finish but dont know if it has old dinosaurs in it or not. Have 2 read the label. Been busy cleaning eng compt and just about finished. Start wheel, brake ,suspension and lower end clean up soon. Winter project. How goes the 308 carb fix? Been a long time down. Gotta go....c uh. ss
