You know Arlie, if I had some extra cash and some time off I could spend a year just cruising around the country looking at all of these. Sacramento has an excellent museum. I need to go down there soon.
How about another Reno pix? Dan Vance flying Mike Browns 3350 Sea Fury. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The Sac Museumis great. They have a cab fwd mallett that they restored and a lot of other cool stuff.
Sounds like the UP Challenger. Oil burner 4-6-6-4. It can really hustle. The 4-8-4 Northern is akin to the SP Daylight that me and Dad rode. What a ride.
Linda & I have been to Portland twice and Seattle once on the Coast Starlite. Pretty neat if you get a small sleeper. A DE but a train neverless. Cheap way to travel if you arent in a hurry.
It's funny how this forum thread has segued into all kinds of talk about everything BUT Ferrari's. But if you take a look at the guys who love, the cars they invariably like other types of GOOD machinery whether it is a P-51( ugh!, who likes those?), a B-17, a B-24,etc. There's nothing like the sight of a Bigboy flying down the track with a frieght consist of 160 cars. I was fortunate enough to see that when we stopped near Mt. Home, Idaho at a seedy gas station to let our two little boys take a pee. We didn't know that the tracks werevery close behind the gas station and when the ground began to rumble and the roar got louder, you should have seen those kids run out of the outhouse to escape whatever was after them. That was an unforgettable sight to see that fire-breathing monster roaring down the track.I'm glad that I have been able to see so many things in my life.....like Curtiss Condors, Ford Tri-motors, steam locomotives, and full rigged ships. You young kids don't know what yer missing. I'm also glad that I have been able to fly a lot of the old stuff, too....Birds, Waco CSO, Stearman, Pietenpol, and lots of others. Enough already
Here is the repaired link to 4004. A VERY cool picture! http://www.steamlocomotive.com/bigboy/4004.jpg It was taken in Speer, Wyoming. Here is an intersting one, a UP 9000 series 4-12-2, 3 cylinder. Two on the outside and one in the middle under the smoke box. I wonder how that thing cornered? Check the link for a better picture. http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_up9000.jpg Image Unavailable, Please Login
Google is my friend......................... I also spent a lot of time researching steam power after seeing 4449 come through Everett Wa. in 1998 on a Burlington employee appreciation tour. It was in "war baby" black at the time and during our run up the gorge also. I was standing 15 feet from the mainline tracks in Snohomish when 4449 went by at 65 MPH plus. The only experience that comes close is standing at the end of Seatac International as a 747 goes over head at 200 feet on final approach. Sorta brings a lump to your throat.............
Soooooooooooo, you have this thing for anchovy? I guess with a name like yours it's genetic......................
Ah, the DB601 ! Uglymutha. DJ gets all his planes, trains, and automobile stuff from being dragged to airshows, race tracks, and railroad tracks, and sailboats since he was a weeny kid. can't tell you how much I enjoy this thread.
