Now you are starting to find out that under that undercoating is just rust preventitive primer, not very pretty. The did not finish anything that was intended to be covered by it.

That 4360 or one just like it used to be on the front porch of the Red Baron resturant at Livermore airport.

I always found big round motors fascinating.

Yeah...me to. Say MASTER ROD. Then ARTICULATING RODS. Who in the hell thought up that system. Could never quite capture the concept until I took a 300hp Lycoming apart. Stroked the one at the Red Barron several times. Good old American Tech stuff....where has it gone....?

Just wait until you get a chance to work on one that has a stationary crankshaft and a rotating cyl. block.

Just Googled that Gnome jobby and cant quite come up with a logical concept just how or why that thing works. Have been working on a red something smillar in the garrage that absolutely defies logic in certan areas. Betcha the rotary had plenty of P factor.

I don't envy your task but it's worth it. Wait until you get to the R/H side where the oil cooler is mounted..............................

Your satisfaction and future ease of maintenance. I HATE working on dirty cars.

If and when you decide to sell it and the future owner sees how pretty it is underneath it will be easier to close the deal.

A tip for your hands, buy a pair of Mechanix gloves, the type with no fingers, saves the knuckles.

Cheap paint brushes and brass tooth brushes from the hardware store came in real handy getting to those nooks and crannies.

Forget how or why it works, I wan't to know how or why anyone would go to that much trouble to build such a goofy thing in the first place.

Oh well, I think the boys in the Fatherland invented it so that explains a lot.

Better cooling with rotating cylinders (?) but big problems with inertial bias, turns really really sharp one way and hardly at all the other (P factor?).

I actually saw one similar in a Sopwith (replica?) at Abbotsford in the 60's. Stinky Castor oil.......................

Your garrage looks to be the same size as my hanger....the rule is that you gotta fill it up...either with airplanes, boats or Ferraris. Looks like you have plenty room for another lift. Ya know, I just found out from one of the PT Boat guys in Portland of the whereabouts of an 80ft Elco. The best lines of any of the lot. Engines, trannys, shafts, props, all hardware minus tubes....but hull is more than likely unmoveable. Have to make a new hull using what is salvagable from the org. and drawings. Picture that in Lake Washington during Sea Fair. Sell rides year round...make plenty money. Awsome machine. The only thing mo betta would be a Shuttle project. PT is huge. 80x25x12...50 tons. May have to enlarge garrage.

How much do they want for that PT boat, Sparky? That reminds me of a PT boat story. A co-worker was living somewhere in northern Louisiana/ southern Arkansas during the 1950s, and a friend put him onto a couple of PT boats that were for sale. Complete and ready to go. He was ready to buy one and wanted to move it up to where he was working/living. He wanted to live on the boat. Unfortunately, when he started checking his maps and charts, there was no complete waterway from where he was buying the boat, and where he wanted to dock it. And he didn't have the money to pay for hauling it on a BIG trailer, (if that was even possible.) So the deal fell through.
On that boat that you found for sale; are the Packard V12s intact? We need pictures!
Gotta love the WWII hardware. (I have an M3A1 Scout car and three M29 Weasels among my rusting hardware. I need a warehouse.)

Agreed. Spasso's garage is too empty. Time to haul in some more metal, the rustier the better to give that place some flavor.

Garage is 28' wide and 34' deep. Enough room for four cars, two nose to tail in each bay. Another way is one car in each bay with 10' X 28' work shop area across the front. I could put a lift in each bay as well and be able to park four cars, two down two up with work shop open space. The pictures are from last year. Since then I have put in temporary tables around the lift for light maintenence. I keep my 240Z and Bimmer in there with the 308 in my basement workshop. This leaves the lift open and half the workshop area open. Currently it's ALL full of "stuff and junk", lawn mower, construction materials etc...........In a pinch I can park five cars total but it's tight.

Better yet, use two of the engines for a 3/4 scale PT boat and use the third engine to power a vintage hydroplane. Let me move a few things around and I think we could just squeeze it in..................................

Rides on Lake Washington in a PT Boat! Running three of those engines at top speed for an hour? Charge what? 300/400.00 per ride to cover fuel at 5.00 ga.!!!!

The sound would bring back childhood memories of hearing supercharged Merlins and Griffons with straight stacks during time trials. I lived 12 miles away and could hear them plain as day.

Hey Steve, which Pt boat did you run across?
I know PT 761, an Elco, was trying to be saved but ran out of time.

761 is or was in Jacksonville.
It was reported to have been destroyed in Sept.
No specifics on how it was destroyed.
Sounds like it could be 761.
761 is said to be the last 80' Elco off the line.
