I was knee high at the time and only a mile away. They still show the film of that barrel roll on channel 5 every year during Seafair. Boy did that sell a lot of airplanes.
I saw Bob Hoover up at Arlington a few years ago doing his "Energy Management" demonstration in what I think was a Shrike?
Hey Sparky, speaking of F-51 crashes, don't forget about the mysterious UFO related Captain Mantell crash in Kentucky: http://www.virtuallystrange.net/ufo/ufoupdates/listers/mantell.html There's about 5 pages to that web site link. I saw a TV show a few years ago where they went back to the crash site and found the wreckage. Did you ever hear anything about it? Do you know anybody with any Mantell F-51 "souvenirs"?
Sure dont know of anyone with any 'stuff' from incident but not to say some isnt out there. Heck, check e-bay. They have just about everything else for sale. That event was certantly down played by big brother and its most likely the single most believeable UFO incident that we were made privy to.
Jerry, what do you spit-shine your eng compt with? Looks like it belongs in one of LA General Hospitals OR's. I know how SPASSO did his from an old post....please let us know. Probibally some sort of ancient mumbo-jumbo sauce conjered up by a medecine-man from a secret tribe or cult near Onxard.
That was a pic when I bought it a year ago - Keep in mind it only had 2,500 miles at that point! I have cleaned it once since then - Nothing special used just some degreaser here & there.
I know what you use Jerry. It comes from the same place as Stabilant 22, I am still in a quandry as to the expense of the stuff. I can't believe that this chemical is so DIFFICULT and TIME CONSUMING and EXPENSIVE to make that 15 ml costs between 50.00 to 100.00 USD. I have a few theories as to the justification of such a price; A. It is a proprietary formula that nobody else has been able to duplicate virtually eliminating competitive pricing. B. It is made by a very old, nearly blind man in a non-descript hut on the outskirts of a tiny village in Scotland. C. In the true spirit of capitalism the Company's motto is, "It works so good we can charge anything we damn well want to charge." D. "It's MAGIC!" E. It is scraped off of the ass end of extremely rare Gnats that inhabit an area near the source of the Amazon River that only come out on moonless nights when when all of the planets in the Solar system are aligned and I'm getting"lucky". F. All of the above
Yea...its called tripple-etch. I brush my teeth with it every morning...kinda gives you a wanna get up and get going sortta attitude. Sure does away with dragon breath, gums and eventyally teeth. uh kno foaming action. God, we gotta get back on subject here. So whats the fix for the carbs on the 308?
The usual, time and money. I was going to pull it apart this weekend but the club is having a drive to the Veterans Home in Port Orchard for display, donations and rides. Unfortunately I will be driving my "Kraut Wagon". Still, it will be much fun and well worth it. I will make one more attempt to do an "on the car" cleanup and blowout of the carbs and fuel system. If that works I'm in the money for the summer. The carbs have new accelerator diaphrams, floats and numerous gaskets from a previous attempt last month by a shop in Seattle. Ultimately they need to come off the car for a total rebuild including, as necessary, rebushing the throttle shafts and resealing the galley plugs. Time and money, time and money, time and money..........................the Ferrari mantra. How can you even sleep at night waiting for that machine?!
Kraut Wagon. It doesn't handle as good as the 308 but still fun. 3 liter V8, 4 cams (chain driven), 4 valves per cylinder, hydraulic cam followers, Electronic Port Injection, 5 speed ZF automatic, and a much better sound system. Many things I wish the old 308 had Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So when you get your TR you'll have to take it out for a "speedometer check". Any good roads around there or will you need to "borrow" the airport?
A CHP bud stopped by the hanger last week & assured me that I could follow him up the road on any Sunday early am. Their crusers quit at 158. I assured him that my brain stops about 120. Thats 10560 fpm and 176 fps or about half the speed of the mustang. I sortta like 70mph mobetta. Chicken sh-t I suppose.
I think you'll find that 120 in a TR is like 60 in the average Honda, a non-issue. (except for unforseen obstacles in the road). That car is just starting to get it's breath at 100. I think you will really enjoy the torque band of this engine. 0 RPM's to 6800 RPM's (give or take). I always give my friend a hard time that the engine in his TR is nothing but a big truck motor, tough as hell, so quit babying the thing and PUNCH IT!. You're gonna love this car!
Brandon let me take it around the block a few times....easy to drive. Sortta like the 51...easy to fly. Gotta be careful of easy to operate machinery that moves fast. Sure get your ass in a crack in a hurry if your head is up and locked. I Like the Beemer. Well built German stuff. Gotta pm your dad. c uh Image Unavailable, Please Login
