Certainly your sarcasm doesn't refer to the ex-husband... They separated three years ago and she hit him with divorce papers and claimed some of the prize two weeks after she find out he won...! She's a total gold digger...!

He should have taken the lump some and left the country. If he liked his kid he could have taken him with him too. :)

Now how the Hell did he divorce her when SHE served the papers to HIM? It makes for a much better store when the big bad man won the lottery and divorced his wife than the actual truth. It's her own damn fault SHE wanted the divorce she got the lawyer had the papers drawn up and served him. She deserves NOTHING, it's her own dumb fault he was just smart enough to see it coming and wait till she dug her own grave.

I totally agree 100%. The media is trying to glorify his wife as if she was the unfortunate victim, when in actuality she is the one who initiated the divorce and then came running back for a share of the winnings. What a *****.

One of the first things that my step Mom's aunt-by-marriage did when she inherited several million was file for divorce. These are people in the late 60's early 70's and been married for 20+ mind you, good times, bad times, but always together. Typical, she files and takes a chunk with her. Amazing. I hope she gets her real prize in the end :D

I dunno. She got $5+MM, and the divorce.

He got $29MM and the divorce.

Sounds like they all made out ok. And probably deserved each other.

Besides, if history serves as an indicator, in ten years they will both have spent all their money and the only one with anything left will be the (then) 21 year old child whose $1MM trust fund will now be worth about $3MM.

Seems to me that there's a karmic balance to the final equation ,eh?

How in the HELL could you spend ~$3m per year or a total of $28m? There is a beautiful house that was just built here in Denver with a 7 car garage going for $5.9m with a guest house and horse property. ~14,000 square feet.

Load up that 7 car garage with SWEET cars:

    Enzo: $1m
    Murci R: $350K
    Carrera GT: $500K
    SL65: $185K
    G55: $100K
    S600: $135K
    360sp: $200K

    $2.5M in cars

Say you go crazy and buy three nice vacation homes for $2m each

    $6m in vacation homes

Spend $1m furnishing all four homes.

Say you spend $200K per year, because everything has been paid cash.

You are still at a little over HALF of the money spent and MOST of it is in real estate.

Barring the private jet, yacht, wild cocaine party scenarios... I just don't get it.

    Confused,

    Nick

    Except, that's not what happens.

    Friends hit you up.

    Family hits you up.

    Strangers hit you up.

And after all, you have a ****load of money, so you are VERY GENEROUS, to friends, family, even strangers.

You buy houses and cars for 10 people who really need them. You blow big bucks on cars that you drive for three months and dump. You invest badly in great business opportunities in swamp lands and internet companies.

Lawyers, accountants, beggars, thieves and assorted miscreants give you bad investment advice. All of which you follow.

You pay taxes the first year on the lump sum of about what, $10,000,000??? (Dr. Who, I know you've quit the biz, but your input here would be helpful.)

That beach front property gets swept out to sea.

You let your properties get ratty, after all, you don't know how to take care of them. Then you move to get a nicer place.

You'd be amazed at some of the stories about lotto winners who end up worse off after the lottery than before.

I don't recall where I heard/read it, but is memory serves me, approx. 85% of all major lottery winners go bankrupt within 5 years.

A lot of it, I'd imagine, has to be with simply not being savvy. Even people who have money and get more (texas guy who won 300MM) blow cash and lose on absolutely frivolous and inconsequential things.

Then, of course, is the problem that if you do win the lottery, there will be scores upon scores of complete strangers who will basically try to get their hands on it.

Pressure, attention, short-lived fame and newfound money all in one big swing: certainly a recipe for disaster. Except for the pimps and prostitutes who make out handsomely.

If anybody on F-chat ever wins the lottery, I don't want them to say that Horsefly started hitting them up for money. Therefore I will simply "hit everybody up for money" right now long BEFORE they ever win the big money. That way, you can't say that I am a fair weather friend. You can always say that I was "at the front door begging for cash" long before you ever made it big. They can always say that "Horsefly was faithful from the start"!!!!!!!
