You weren't kidding about the slow server -- less than 1kb/s, approx. 30 hours to get one of the files!!!

    Can you mirror anywhere?

Guys, it's not the server, but the connection to the server. Just do a r-click and Save Target As... , have a glass of nice tequila, and it will be ready to watch in the morning.

There has been a constant flow of 70-80 simultaneous downloads since I posted this.

    LET DOWN! :(

The videos are only ~25sec a piece, shot from bleachers very far from the cars, shakey camera work, jittery video, and the cars are only close to the camera at one point... :( They are so large because they are apparently uncompressed. With decent compression, both of these videos and sound would be less than 2MB...

OTOH, it shows a Porsche stomping some Italian ass...so it can't be all bad ! :D

For those wondering, the CGT does a good enough number on the Ferraris for the people commentating the video to say "NO CONTESTO"...

Actually the first is 1 minute 27 seconds (65MB) and the second is about a minute (50MB).

In comparison, the TopGear videos I've downloaded are about 80MB for 10 minutes or so of what appears to be similar resolution.

I tried to compress them (and before that, edit them) but can't find a tool that works. For example, Windows Movie Maker can play them, but not edit them, and TMPGenc can't open them at all. They started off as ".mod" files.

I tried standard ZIP with max compression, and the size was the same. I think the only way to shrink them is to re-encode with something like DivX, or reduce the resolution.

If anyone can help, I'm all ears!

PS The Trapster(SM) site is moving to a co-lo in a month or so. That will definitely make a huge difference. We plan on posting some very cool content!

    Peter,

if you want help for video compression feel free to drop me a line via PM or (prefer) Instant Message. Encoded in an MP4 codec such as divx or xvid, and with the sound encoded as MP3, that would be a 2 or 3 mb file at high (web) resolution.

As for the file length, my windows media player cut off each one after about 30 seconds and listed the length of each clip at about 26 seconds.

wow, i saw 1:27 min on the first one and 1:06 on the 2nd. nothing worthwhile happens during the first 26 sec on either. the meat is after that.

I apologize, apparently the website terminated my downloads. Upon checking the file sizes, I only got about 18MB of either one before I got cut off :(

Hopefully they can be reuploaded so I can take a look at them, I told Pete I'd help him with his encoding predicament but it seems rather pointless unless I can get my hands on the full sized images.

your best bet is probably to have pete FTP em to you. my downloaded files apparently are the full ones since one is 65 and the other 50 mb so i can ftp em to you if you give me instructions.

    Ben,

I don't really have any FTP access with more than one login. If you use any kind of instant message software you could send it directly to me, that's about the only thing I can offer....

Thanks to Richard, I'm now a video "expert" :)) (yeah, right!) I shrunk the files and posted the smaller versions as DivX/AVI, but he is going to do even better things and post them on his site.

For those of you with incredible patience, the revised (smaller) files are at:

I have one of the files (CGT1.avi) down at about 10MB at 740x480 the way you sent it (DIVX). Compressed the way I like at 420x360 (XVID, 2:1 high quality compression) it is about 4MB.

Here is the file I mentioned...
    http://www.deepabyss.com/work/cgt1_full.avi

It is all a matter of playing with compression options and seeing what works best. If I had the extra time to dedicate i could probably get this file to look a bit better and weigh in around 8MB at full res, between 3 and 4MB optimally using xvid.

Feel free to jump up and down on my server, it has pretty good connection speeds :)
