Since the 308 GT4 is the feature for the current Cavallino, thought I’d share this from the Spring 1975 issue of Prancing Horse (also featuring the 308 GT4).

This is always a fun image as a lot of folks believe the 308 GT4 was meant to replace the 246 GT/GTS. Of course, that’s just not the case—no more than the Mondial was meant to replace the 308 GTB/GTS. I think this does a pretty good job of proving that point. Plus it's kind of weird seeing a 308 GTB with Dino wheels, and it’s a neat little piece of history.

Might just be my eye, but brand new the rear sits lower than the front.

I don't think it's stationary, it seems to be accelerating out of the gates.

    All the best,

Many 308B/S have that "front-end up" stance when stock -- it's why we've had about 10,000 threads about lowering the front coachwork ;).

    1) for sure rebadging the car made it a much bigger seller.
    2) its kind of a pity now as the Dino brand is so well respected

I think they made the right decision. The 308 set up ever mid engine Ferrari since and it was a direct outgrowth of the success of the 246 Dino. Without the 206/ 246 Ferrari might be very different today -- and maybe out of business.

I've made this point several times, it was very close to being the case that all subsequent V8's would have been badged as Dinos but a simple marketing decision made in the late 70's changed all that. Part of the reason was because the GTB release was delayed due to quality issues they were having with the fiberglass and so the GT4 came out first.

My car has a single Dino badged air vent (which was in car when new). Just wondering if anybody else has the same thing. Image Unavailable, Please Login

I remember for years people still didn’t consider it a ‘real’ Ferrari unless it had a v12. Who else remembers this?

Around about the year 1995 I took my 246 Dino GT to an Italian car show in Palos Verdes in LA. Some local Ferrari owners were organizing it.

So I drive up and the guy says: “Drive this down the hill with the other Fiats”. The high ground was reserved for the “real” Ferraris.

    Times have changed.

Interesting that the Fiat s now more valued ($) than many of the real Ferraris. That hierarchical attitude about what is better or more real is, for me, one of the downsides of Ferrari ownership. That and cost of parts :)

Not exclusive to the Ferrari community, of course, as other marques have their own versions of snobthink.

Did those pictures come from a book? If so, what book—would love to get my hands on it.

You're right on the money with this. I've experienced A LOT of this "snobthink" when I owned a Porsche Boxster and 996. It's a big part of why I finally sold my Porsches—I wasn't having fun at any of their events and the Porsche crowd just seemed very elitist. Of course, then I went out and bought a 308 GT4, so I expected the same (if not worse) attitudes with that! However, it's been a much different experience. Times have certainly changed, at least in the Ferrari world. I've never been treated like a second-class citizen in my GT4 like I was in my 996. In fact, I've been welcomed with open arms and invited to some pretty exclusive events. Snobthink probably still exists in the Ferrari world, but it's definitely dissipating. And that's a good thing!!

My perspective is different. As a completely naive fourteen year old in 1968, when I first saw the 246 Dino, it became my favorite "Ferrari". As far as I remember everybody I encountered always called it the Ferrari Dino and it was the Ferrari that I thought I might even be able to own one day. Now, despite people claiming that back in the days you could have got one dirt cheap, I always had my eye on them and they always were about the price of a house - still are. So I never got one. Of course I did finally get a 308, which is basically the same car with a bigger motor but for much le$$ than a house and I've been completely happy with it. I think when you get a Ferrari, all of the quirks and nuances of your particular year/model/color become you and you'll defend them as the best till the end against anyone who begs to differ. I still have that unacquainted love for the Dino but I love my house too.

Still some around and I must say there really isn't anything like the sound of a Ferrari 12 at full throat! (much as I love my 308)
