Just before 06 ends, I took a walk around the old town of Singapore. A little like Melaka of Malaysia but lost some original flavours as there's no more street hawkers & old businesses. Buildings are restored & rented out to franchised eateries that can afford the expensive rentals. But we should never miss the famous Katong Laksa!

Actually there's so many of these here & each has their fair share of "celebrity status". I had mine on #49 along Ceylon Rd. Not as fragrant as I wished, I thought adding some "Haebee" (fried & dried mini prawns?) would be splendid & give more texture to the taste.

The red building is the once famous Katong Bakery, a landmark along that area.

More.... some shophouses have these tiny alleys that seperate them. Most are pre-WWII houses. Actually many of us took them for granted in our daily life driving pass them but if you stop to look & appreciate, the architecture is quite unique & often a blend of western & asian.

The 2nd & 3rd pictures are unique houses which can only be found along this stretch of East Coast road & Geylang lorong 36. They are not gazetted as National Heritage houses by our URA which means they'll be torn down! They have a basement & some owners convert them to living area or studios. Kind of like some of those old London apartments.

The last picture is a typical apartment block from the 70s? Quite a few such properties waiting for en-bloc & they are occupying outstanding locations.

    Yep,
I think I've been to Katong area before...I think...but never noticed the buildings. Near Joo Chiat whatever, right?

Good photography Jon. Maybe, since yer like to photograph buildings, try to get a perspective-correction lens. No AF though but I have one that replaces all oher 'standard' zoom lens.

Note ; Aiya..your laksa pic makes me feel hungry again lah....

Aiya...! By the time DHL arrives, the guy will call me in Mandarin and I'll be stuffed trying to tell them where!!! That's what happened with some documents that the US guys FedEX'd to me...

Anyways, in CN, shrimps are really cheap! I bought myself Yi Chin (One Catty) of shrimp for like..RMB1.50! and with my MY curry powder, made myself some prawn curry. Problem was looking for santan or coconut milk, but managed to get a couple of cans of Made in Thailand santan and they turned out pretty well. In Dalian, difficult to find mien, so I bought some imported Korean rice noodles which is like the Nyonya laksa thingy. It wasn't the real deal, but since I'm alone..er..not exactly..with a non-MYan/SGan..only me alone knows that it ain't the real Nyonya Laksa.....

Speaking of rojak, one of the best rojak you can find in the east is in the Dunman Road hawker centre (near junction of Joo Chiat/Koon Seng Rd). It's called Lau Hong Ser (#02-14) and is next to an equally popular wanton mee stall. Problem is, you'll have to wait 30-45 mins for your food at either stall...
