Saw the Sony A200 at Wal-Mart with a lens for $600 today. How would this compare to the D40?

not a fan of sony still cameras. dont know how good the A200 is, but i'd definitely go with the D40. or hell, get the D60. i think right now at costco for $800 you can get the D60 with 2 VR lenses.

The D40 is almost double the price, I say buy the A200 have it for 1 year then sell it and get the D50.

Nikon D40, start shooting with the 18-55 then get a bigger lens or maybe you can get a D40/D40X/D60 for a good price with 2 lens

Try to stick with Nikon or Canon. There is much more system flexibility with those brands.
Go with either the D40 or D60. Almost all stores offer the D40 plus 18-55 plus 55-200 for just $550.
I personally have the D80, which is my first SLR, I got 2 weeks ago. That is out of the price range you are looking at.
    Thanks

Go with the D40, dont waste your money on a D40x/D60. The megapixels mean nothing, unless you plan on blowing up a picture to the size of the side of a building. Also with the D40x/D60 your max speed with flash is only 250ths of a second whereas with the D40 it is 500ths of a second, twice as fast.

Start with any Nikon...when you get really good...go with Canon.
