    HOW DOES THIS CRAP HAPPEN???!!!

The bank tried to call my home and wasn't able to get thru to leave a message on Friday about some questionable activity on my ATM visa card. I try to pay for gas on Sunday and my card is denied. I know I have cash in the account and can't understand why. I call the bank and find out that from sometime Friday to Saturday evening, someone has charged up $8164.78!!!

These MOFOs went from SoCal to NorCal...a damn shopping spree! Everything from toys @ Toys-R-Us to Apple to Home Depot.

I asked how to prevent this in the future. And the reply was, "if you find out, let us know". Is it really that hopeless? Are we all just victims in waiting? I'm so happy that the bank caught it. I feel for banks as they are the ones to eat the loss.

This $#!T makes me so angry! Sorry, had to vent.

This happened to me once. A store clerk had apparently taken a photocopy of my check and printed the bank routing and account numbers on duplicate checks.

Oddly, I was touched for about 8K as well...probably a "Sub 10K, IRS" thing?

If the bank tried to call then they had suspicions and should have frozen the account even though they were not able to get a hlod of you. You should demand that the bank replace the stolen funds into your account.

This is the exact reason why I dont use debit cards or credit cards linked to my bank account.

I spent time with them this morning on the phone and we went thru all the activity since Friday. They are crediting my account and they are taking the loss.

I'm going to check my account for any strange activity throughout this month.

After this incident, I'm compelled to follow your example. I thought using the debit card would be one less thing I'd have to do in paying for stuff. But I guess it's also one less thing for a crook.

\Do you transfer funds to a separate "holding" checking account to use then?

I'm assuming they meant that they use credit cards. Just not ones tied into their bank accounts. Then just pay the cards on time and for the full amount.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am glad your bank credited your account. Good sign to see a bank come through.

When I was 18 I got a credit card with my mom as a co-signer. That card only had a $500.00 limit. Over the years I have kept that card and purposely kept the limit at $500. I use it for gas, out of state purchases, and purchases at restaurants. I have other credit cards I use for larger purchases.

I doubt the bank is eating the loss. I assume that someone has a physical copy of your card. Most likely, you paid for something at a gas station, convenience store or something like that, and someone working there had a card reader which scanned and read the numbers on your card. Then they programmed another card with your card number and signed it themselves. That way, when signing a receipt it looks identical to the signature on the card, because it is!

I am pretty sure the bank will do chargebacks with the vendors and the vendors will be the ones eating it. I know that whenever we are a victim of CC fraud, WE foot the bill. Any one of the vendors who allowed things to be charged could have checked the ID of the person making the purchase. Some probably did, and the perp said they had no ID on them and the charge was never attempted. In a retail store like Best Buy or The Apple store, they should

    A) have cameras pointing at the registers to get a face-shot of everyone making a purchase to assist cops in ID'ing a criminal
    B) Check ID for any sizeable purchase - maybe anything over $200 or so, or maybe any purchase to be really safe
    C) Not rely solely on the register monkeys (who are often kids who are completely untrained in signature verficiation or worse, don't care)

Glad to hear things worked out. Anyone using the "VISA" or "MasterCard" logo must comply with the terms of those companies charge agreements. That usually involves limiting customer liability to $50 in the event of fraudulent charges.

I had a guy ding my business VISA card for $7500. The thing is it was in frickin Spain of all places. It was jewelry and watches that were charged and it was through an online website. What kind of moronic site owner allows a US credit card to buy many thousands of $$ worth of jewelry and drop ship it to some address in Spain?!?!

Actually you are almost correct - the insurance that the bank carries will be the ones that cover the charges - in most all cases the vendors do not have to cover - since the card company is the one that supplies the readers and verification processes.

In the case where you as the card holder does not accept the goods, dispute the charges or overcharges - the credit card company will process against the vendor - however in the case of fraud - this is usually not the case.
