Above and Beyond

Last night, I watched a fascinating documentary on the founding of the Israeli Air Force in 1948. Although I had read about this before, notably the irony of the fact that their first fighter aircraft were Czech-built Messerschmitts, one thing I did not know was that the Israelis got hold of three Boeing B-17s and used them fairly extensively. This included a raid on Cairo that had a profound effect on Egyptian morale. The bombers subsequently remained operational well into the 1950s.
