The OEM cost for an ABS ECU (355) is $3200.... + tax. A company in the UK called BBA-Reman, has offered a rebuild to original OEM specs for 175 pounds. The web-site is www.reman.com. Anyone heard of the company ... any comments? Regards, Pete
Pete, please pardon me if I missed the history of this problem. Why do you feel you need the ABS ECU rebuilt? How did you diagnose the problem? I am currently troubleshooting a ABS issue with my 348. Thanks, John.
John, I've had all the wheels off and checked the connections at each .. they seem OK. I then did the fuse trick ... put the fuse in the empty ABS ECU slot and counted the flashes ...2 and a 1. The workshop manual says check the connections to the valves .. which i did .. seem OK. Then the book says .. if this doesn't fix it .. go buy an ECU. That's about it. I would dearly love to get hold of a good one and just swop it out to se it the problem goes away .. maybe I'll ask a couple of guys in the local Chapter.... then i know what would happen ... put the good one back where it cam from and the ABS stays on!!!! Regards,
Pete, Interesting! My code indicates a faulty ABS return valve. As you indicated I removed and cleaned all the connections between the ECU and the Master cylinder/ ABS valve assembly. No change. My manual states if the connections are good replace the faulty valve! Purchased a as new complete pedal box out of a 355 with complete master cylinder and ABS valve system just in case. Prior to this change I will: 1. Bleed the system 2. At that time check all connections at the wheels 3. Again remove and clean all the ABS connections. If all that does not cure the problem, change the complete pedal box assembly! If you lived closer I would propose swapping ECU assemblies to determine if yours is faulty! Does not appear difficult to remove. Good luck! John
John, I've actually got 2 versions of the ABS fault codes ... both are meant to come from the original Ferrari workshop manuals. One 2.1 code simply says ... ECU fault. The other says ..Valve or connecting wire defective OR Defect in Conrol Unit (power transistor) Can you point me to the main valve... ? Regards, Pete
If you go with the reman.com thing, don't forget to ask if they rebuild both ECUs. There is a Teves unit for 95-96 cars and a Bosch unit for 97-99 cars. You might also consider calling Ferrari Parts Exchange. I had a master cylinder go bad last week and in researching a replacement I learned that they just got a 355 parts car in. It might save you some $$. I think their number can be found in the rolodex - www.ferrariclub.com/rolodex.
Pete, I dont know if this answers your question but the hydraulic unit I am referencing is termed Main Hydraulics in the Ferrari tech book and workshop manual. The Main Hydraulic system is located at the base of the brake master cylinder assembly. Looking at the Ferrari schematic the system is direct fed by the ABS electronic control unit. The connectors are located under the brake fluid reservoir. If I recall correctly my ABS fault code indicates a problem with the right front return valve, for what that is worth! I have been told my 348 spider shares the same ATE Teves system as the 328 and early 355s. I hope this is the case since the pedal box I purchased is out of an early 355! Charles did you locate a master cylinder for your 355? If I may ask, what was the failure?
Already been to FerrariPartsExchange .. unfortunately their ABS ECU was from Bosch. However, they were extremely useful in pointing me to another source in the UK. The company offering to rebuild my ABS are an ATE agent (Teves?) and admit they have not rebuilt a Ferrari unit ... but, and I believe them ... an ECU is an ECU.... boards, transistors etc etc, and they say they can very easily test the whole unit for electronics failure, and whereas they would normally just swop out the bad board, in my case they will simply replace the faulty component. It's a flat fee 175 pounds .... $350. We will see!
When Plugzit was out here we looked quickly through some of the parts I picked out of the Calving Barn a few years back. As memory has it I left 3 1/2 348's behind at that barn and drug a Hay binder in front of the door as I left... it still sitting there. In the Corona induced conversation we made plans to return to that barn under the cover of moon light The first thing I picked out of the first box was an ABS ECU... I would bet I have a number of them up in the loft. Having just put up 6 tons of hay in the barn yesterday I saw at least a half dozen complete peddle boxes with full ABS pumps and tanks on them sitting on the shelf. If you need something to try on your car, let me know. You may be brushing hay (and worse) off it but its only a phone call away.
