I’m sure there’s a chance that may have been the root cause of the bearing failure, because it now has both symptoms. The belt was loose when I checked it (121hz), and it had grinding and play. This whole process was initiated by no cooling leading to the discovery of a blown fuse, so maybe when specs got so out of whack something overheated/overworked and blew the fuse before it got too out of control? So all bad things. hoping for a fresh start with this overhaul.
Interim update while I’m still waiting to receive my replacement compressor: I was out driving the car the other day, keeping it under 5K rpm to avoid the burning belt smell, when it slowly but surely started smelling at lower and lower rpm’s. Lo and behold, something had finally reached a breaking point, and in addition to now smelling like smoke at even 3 and 4K rpm’s, I looked in the mirror to see smoke in the engine bay! Mind you, I have been in the habit of checking this on a regular basis since I first smelled it a week ago. This was the first time I saw actual smoke. I coasted along looking for the safest place to pull over, CONVINCED I was about to become another “Ferrari burned to the ground” YouTube video. I pulled onto a side street, grabbed BOTH my fire extinguisher sticks, jumped out, popped the lid, and immediately prepared to fight a full on fire. Thankfully, it was still just the AC compressor burning the belt -and perhaps itself- and smoking… After letting it cool and stop smoking, I drove it home shifting and driving at or under 2K rpm’s to prevent the smell and the smoke. Once home, I put it up on the lift and dropped the pan. Amongst my findings: A linear pile of burnt rubber shavings on the belly pan directly underneath the compressor from the belt and also from within the compressor I believe; Vulcanized rubber or plastic dripping from within the pulley/ compressor assembly, dried and hardened like a mummified victim of an automotive inferno, and blobs of burnt rubber on the belt, which I immediately cut off, so I didn’t have to remove any other belts until I had to install the new compressor. I didn’t want to be without the car until the new system is installed, so an easy snip of the belt cut the system out of the loop -literally- and let me keep enjoying the drive until it’s all back together! That belt also turns the alternator iirc .so now you are not charging .. Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
Nope, I checked. AC only. At least on the 360. I went out for a beautiful 75 mile drive today, 89*, no AC, windows wide open; gorgeous.
X-post to sum up all my AC issues with the final chapter! https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/conclusion-and-happy-ending-to-my-360-ac-woes.660430/#post-148567755
