pretty basic, but I changing a belt and was wondering if the AC compressor will spin freely? or do I need to turn on the AC system to get it to spin freely? or is the compressor gone and i need a new one?

The a/c compressor pulley should spin freely as long as the magnetic clutch is not engaged (or energized). Usually, auto a/c systems have an electrically operated magnetic clutch that engages to actually drive the compressor only when cooling is called for.

ok, what if the belt that is on the AC compressor also runs to the alternator? should it still be "locked" like it is now?

Compressor pulley should be able to spin free without the drive belt.
