Does anyone know the part number for the expansion valve that controls the AC temp on my 1983 308 QV? The attached capillary tube runs through the firewall to the console temp control as a single sealed unit. A clue on a source and price would help too.

    Thanks

I bought one (109819) for my '78 308 GTS from Rutlands a year or so ago. Under $75 at the time. Probably the same part for a QV.

This is not the expansion valve, but the thermostatic switch. In the meantime, you can just jumper the switch. That leaves the A/C on high where it usually needs to be to get any cooling. Just turn the A/C fan switch to off when you don't want the A/C running.

Yikes! Thats a dangerous game 330gt, jumping the wires on the switch will mean the a/c compressor is running all the time. It needs this switch to cut-out the compressor clutch when the pressures get high. Without this continuing switching action you could end up bursting a pipe or even wrecking the compressor!!

Rustybits, I think doing what 330gt is saying will let you turn the AC on and off as you want using the fan switch, nothing wrong with that as a stop gap measure.

The switch in question senses temperature, not pressure. There are low and high pressure switches on the freon lines that function independently.

When the temperature switch is fully clockwise (coldest setting), it is electrically on, no longer temperature sensitive, the same as being jumpered. Now, how many of you have ever had the temperature switch other than on the coldest setting? When you need the A/C in a 308, it is inadequate so the coldest setting is always needed.

BTW, in most modern cars, the A/C compressor (if on) is running all of the time. The temperature control modulates the hot water flow through the heater core to control the air temperature.

Ah, sorry guys, just read the post properly, and realised you weren't talking about jumping the trinary switch(doh!). Many modern compressors do indeed run all the time, but it's an entirely differrent set-up, as has been said. I will read posts properly in future........
