So I go to UT Austin and I have a debate going on with my self. I am 90% sure that I want to fly for the Marines, a career path that prefers but does not require people to have a math/science oriented major if they want to fly. My problem is that I am not a natural at the math and science related subjects; I can do them, but I am much more comfortable with Gov't, English, and History etc..

My debate is, do I pick a subject like physics or astronomy and risk getting below the minimum 3.5 GPA that the marines require, or do I go with English and get a really high GPA but risk not getting selected for flight school because I do not have a math/science related major.

I have not taken the marine scholarship yet, I have till the end of summer semester to decide, and if I agree to sign will tag on two years to my school career but make me a dual major in English and either econ(my current major but I am not to fond of it mainly because I still have to take calc 1 through 3 which could kill my GPA) or history.

Another appealing thing about the marines is their grad program and law program that you can do through them. They will support you financially through the completion of these programs as long as you give years of your life to them. So, those two programs kind of make me lean to the liberal arts side of things since I have always heard that law school likes English majors.

What would yall do? I am leaning towards liberal arts but I am just not 100% sure.

What's your GPA now? If you can't do the math to figure out how much you can let your GPA drop off over the next two years and retain your cumulative 3.5, then you won't care much for partial differential equations. :D

An option: audit the next math class you'll need and see how it goes. If you crash and burn it doesn't affect your GPA. If it's a breeze, take your shot. If it's heavy going, stick with English. Chances are, you can't do the math you'll need for a tech degree. I say that without knowing you, but having seen a LOT of people struggle with the freshman level calculus and physics courses, not realising it gets a LOT harder.

Not trying to be a smartass, just giving you a reality check. Plus I just woke up and haven't taken my tact pills yet! And remember:

    Mechanical engineers build weapons
    Civil engineers build targets!

Well this may seem dumb but why don't you ask the marine's what they are looking for in course requirements to qualify for flight training.

How fast can you run and for how long?

If you cant run 3 miles in under 22 min every day of the week, try the Air Force. (Seriously!)

You know what you want to do, but you don't want to "risk it." Nonsense. You CAN do it, just work your ass off. You are going to a great school. Study math, study math, study math. Pass the class, and be on your way to happiness. Do not pass up on a great opportunity to do what you want to just simply because you do not know the math. If you do not get accepted to the marines, then at least you tried. But ultimately, you will have a better degree in the end, which will come in handy later on down the road.
