It is possible to directly access the battery in the front compartment and attach the cables of a battery tender. But it is rather complicated and not something one would like to do while wearing a business suit.

Does anybody have an idea if there is an easier access to the main power circuit in a t?

If you remove the engine access panel behind the rear seat back you will find a power junction box where you can hookup a battery tender. all you need is a #3 phillips screwdriver.

    best regards, Jim

I permanently installed one of these right next to the battery. Just plug it in and leave it there when you're not using the car. The plug will be accessable right next to the car's main power switch. I'm not sure it it will work for European power.

    Hey AR!,
My battery tender connections on Rachel are made at the front, with the connector protruding through that same side seam in front of the tire. It's all very simple. I'll take some pics in tomorrow's daylight and then post here. I have a very happy battery:)

    You and your's be well:)

Two method work quite well. Splice on a cigarette lighter adapter and plug it in.

I like the Radio Scrap one, as it has a nice long cord on it too: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062275&cp=2032056.2032136.2032154&pg=2&parentPage=search&y=13&origkw=cigarette&kw=cigarette&x=7&numProdsPerPage=20&parentPage=family

Or, you can plug it into the "trouble light" jack under the dash using the appropriate BMW accessory plug available here:

    http://www.rallylights.com/hella/cigar_plug.asp

Get the one pictured on the left, and it can adapt to BOTH a regular cigarette lighter or the Ferrari trouble light jack.

Run the cord out the door...yes you can close the door on the cord the soft rubber weather stripping will easily accomodate for the cord without pinching.

My battery tender (Black and Decker) came with a cigarette lighter plug. Simple to use ...just plug it in to the lighter. I know it works because when I open the car door (light comes on)it starts to charge.

Thanks a lot for all the useful advice.

Removing the engine access panel is less painstaking than fiddling in the front compartment. However, simply using the cigarette lighter plug seems to be the easiest option for me. The CTEK charges just with 2 Amp or so, for a current that low the plug should be sufficient.

BTW, I use the Black & Decker with the cig. lighter connection, for my Audi Allroad because it's a such a pain in the butt to get to the battery. Works like a dream.

I hooked up the Black & Decker unit to my 90 Mondial t and it blew the radio/horn/antenna fuse (25amp). Not sure why any suggestions?

Agreed, make sure you wired the adapter plug correctly. Check the recepticle too, it may have a loose wire on the back or something.

There isn't but one way to hook it up. The only option is the 2A or 1A setting. Any other suggestions?

Loke Mike C and others have said, go with the lighter method, it's fast, easy to connect and it works great.

I used the cig lighter and that is when the fuse blew. I don't know how a 2A charge could blow a 25amp fuse. Is this even possible?

Have you verified the operation of the battery tender first? I would use one of the other connection methods to determine it is operating correctly. Then, try the cigarette lighter adapter with it, on another car.

After replacing the 25 amp fuse, does the cigarette lighter function normally?

I would check the wiring on the cigarette lighter itself. I wonder if the lighter could be wired up with the polarity reversed? (I'm speaking of on the car side, not the battery tender side)

I'm sure the answer is right in front of my face, but I'm going to ask a stupid question anyway: how would I plug in a battery tender using a cigarette lighter adapter on my Mondial Cab when it has that funky put-your-cigarette-into-it lighter? Is there a retrofit that does away with the factory lighter base?

Again, I'm probably overlooking the obvious, but I'm confident someone here will be able to straighten me out......Thanks.

Two choices, replace the lighter (many people do this, so they can also use a radar detector, charge their cell phones, etc), OR buy an adapter to plug into the trouble light socket under the dash. I am not certiain your car has the trouble light socket, but most Ferraris from the 70's through the 80's had them. The socket is actually a BMW accessory plug/adapter used commonly on BMW motorcycles to plug in various electrical accessories while riding like electric vests, radios, and radar detectors.

    http://www.rallylights.com/hella/cigar_plug.asp

The plug adapter on the left allows you to use it in both the Ferrari/BMW accessory socket, and also in a standard cigarette lighter plug.
