I drove the GTC to a show in Highlands NC a couple of weeks ago. Everything went well on the ride. However during the weekend I had a couple of incidents where the starter would not turn over when I turned the key. Fortunately after a couple of tries it caught and started. When I got home the car sat for a day. In the morning I could not get it to turn over after many tries.

Had a friend come over to help me diagnose. Opened the hood and put my finger on the starter relay while my buddy turned the key. I could clearly feel and hear the relay close. But the starter didn't turn over. That leaves only one diagnosis.....the starter solenoid.

After some effort of pushing and towing with my ATV I got the car pointed downhill. Tried to start it by turning on the ignition and popping the clutch while the car was going down the steep driveway. No luck as starting cold carb car is not as simple as it sounds. Fortunately all the effort resulted in "bumping" the solenoid so I could start normally. Basically the solenoid has a dead spot.

I will need to pull the starter and solenoid out. It has been over 40 years since I did this on my first GTC I am a bit fuzzy on the procedure. If I recall correctly I have to remove the heat shield over the right side exhaust manifolds and remove the manifolds. Can anyone confirm this is the proper procedure for access? I don't see any way of accessing from underneath.

Additionally I will have to obtain new manifold gaskets to replace the existing once removed. Any recommendations on the best sources for these gaskets?

I was thinking of putting this in the tech thread but since it's a vintage banger I thought it might be best to ask for advice here. Thanks in advance.

    You have the correct procedure.

    Disconnect battery
Remove heat shield, rear exhaust manifold, starter heat shield, starter.
Bill Young at GT Car Parts for gaskets, but good chance you can reuse the old ones. In any case coat them with Hi-Temp silicone to be leak-free.

    No worries there.

The alternator in my GTC is an AC/Delco,
The a/c compressor is a Sanden,
    The cooling fans are Spals.
The a/c evaporator fan is an MB unit.
The electric fuel pump is a Holley.

All of the originals are in boxes.

One day I would like to have a 6 carb set-up for the type 209. THAT would be the ultimate step in making my 330 even better!!

Sorry purists......I drive. And I love driving my 330 GTC.
