I know Seth and Hovik got caught in the traffic as a result of this:

September 17, 2007 -- A fearless Marine who survived the bloodshed in Iraq, had just gotten engaged, and was "looking forward to his future," was killed on a Brooklyn highway yesterday when his motorcycle was hit by a car, police sources said.

As Cpl. David Skarulis, 26, lay bleeding on the Belt Parkway, he was then struck by another car driven by a fellow Marine. Both men had been headed to an event honoring Leathernecks who served in Iraq, the sources said.

Skarulis, who lived in Valley Stream, L.I., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither of the two drivers who struck him was charged.

Skarulis, who had been assigned to Battalion 6 of the reserves, returned from Iraq in March after serving for about a year. He resumed his college studies and had recently gotten engaged, a relative said.

The accident occurred at 6 a.m. on the parkway as Skarulis was heading to Family Day, a Marine event at Floyd Bennett Field. He was traveling fast, police sources said.

Skarulis was about to take the Flatbush Avenue exit to the former airfield - now home to the Marine Reserves and NYPD helicopter units - when his bike was hit.

After his bike went down, it was struck by another car, although police sources said they believe Skarulis was already dead after slamming into the pavement.

I heard on the news what had happened that morning, because the traffic was just horribly bad for a sunday morning.
Sad, if he was out for a spirited ride, belt parkway is just not the place for it. Its easily one of the worst highways in the tristate area, the patholes are really bad and everywhere. Its no place for a bike to speed, even when its as empty as it is on sunday mornings.

    RIP

    That sucks. :(

I won't go anywhere near the belt on a bike. I've seen friends bend wheels on some of those trenches.

This is why I have no desire to own a bike while living in north Jersey, roads in the tri-state area are to crowded at all times. RIP soldier, and thank you for serving our country.

Wow...it's like when you get a ticket when you're right at your exit, only so much worse :(

The irony of fighting a war and living to go home and then dying in a road accident.

Very sad. I passed it on my way to LI. Actually stopped to let a Marine pass in front of my car as I was heading east. Traffic was completely stopped for 10 mins eastbound. He was still on the road under a sheet.
