So I was up in Salem NH doing some shopping--an unfamiliar part of the world--in my 308 and I needed to get gas. I pulled into a gas station that had a decent price and before I realized it, the guy was standing there to pump my gas. It was full-serve. I always go to self-serve and pump my own, especially in the 308, but I didn't want to look like a jerk, so I let the guy pump the gas (after I got out and showed him where the filler was....they really hide it on the 308).

So the conversation goes like this:

GAS GUY: So, how fast does this thing go?
ME: I have no idea...I don't drive that fast. It's a red police magnet.
GG: I guarantee you this baby will go over 200.
ME: I seriously doubt it. Do you know how few cars can go that fast? It takes a lot of horsepower to go 200.
GG: Well how much horsepower does it have?
    ME: About 250.
GG: 250? No way. It has to have more than that. It's a Ferrari! My Mustang has more than that.
ME: Well, it's a 30 year old car.
GG: No f____ing way! What year is this?
    ME: 1977

That was the important part of the conversation. I'm just sharing this because I thought it was funny that the guy expected that because it was a Ferrari it should have an insane amount of horsepower and go 200 MPH. I'm glad to know that even though I'm driving a car that can only do 150 and only has 250 HP (probably not even that much) other people think it's fast! I'm going to start lying and telling people it has 600 HP and goes 250 MPH just for fun. :D

When Steven does his supercharger he should be able to push his car closer to 165. 200.. prolly not.

I did get the old "What's with all the Corvettes? Is it some kind of club?" question when we all (20 cars) stopped for Gas at the FCA Maine Event this last weekend. The lady was quite apologetic when I politely pointed out they were Ferraris.

I think for a lot of people "corvette" is a generic sportscar term, just like "coke" means most types of soda in the South.

Funny conversation though! I remember I was riding shotgun in a 6.0 Diablo in Vegas, and a young foreign guy ran up to the window at a light and asked, "Wow, is this a rental!?" When the owner smiled and said no, the guy looked stunned and was speechless.

I told the local paper my 308GTB went 185.......they printed that.

It was really Art Car #185, but CLOSE ENOUGH......

I don't push it, as I have a low threshold of death..........

So with a straight face i said 400HP. Really?? WOW!

I could hear you guys in the back of my mind laughing!

George Costanzza (Seinfeld) had a saying, but i forgot how it goes.
