I remember the opening of the race described how teams were using smaller brake discs and brake cooling ducts because of not needing them at Indy. Adding a chicane would have increased the demands on the inferior braking systems which might have led to very premature brake wear resulting in catastrophic brake failure and crashes. Imagine going into turn one at full song, pressing on the brake pedal only to have a brake rotor explode while trying to outbrake your opponent. I can just see two cars and drivers going out in horrendous fashion. Yeah, that chicane would have been real safe.

Not only that, but were they going to ask drivers to race on a track setup they had never even seen before??? Or are they then going to bend the rules more and allow them some practice runs, but then, what about their planned fuel loads...where would it stop??

A chicane was probably a bad idea, they should have allowed tires stops for this race only.

A chincane would have done nothing more than to put all the teams on equal footing. So what if all the drivers had to go a little slower?

why did they think of it the day of the race? They had raced there before ( six years I think) di the track change so much from last year? To me F1 really shot themselves in the leg in the US....fans should get a complete refund...

The damage has been done. The airfare was paid, the hotels paid, the meals, the souvenirs, etc, etc. If the price of Sunday's tickets was refunded it would be a token contribution. Much more money was spent with entities that will not and should not give a refund (plus; Friday and Saturday's sessions all went off as planned with no disappointment). Its unfortunate that this happened but there is little that can be done to restore the tarnish USA-based F1 has recieved. I don't think the USGP at Indy will be around much longer - and it won't be missed by this fan.

Michelin should be banned from F1.

They have clearly demonstrated that they do not posess the technology nor manufacturing to build racing tires up to the demands of F1. As such, they should not be allowed to participate in F1.

Bridgestone hopefully has the production capacity to supply all teams.

F1 has become so advanced that a DIFFERENT tire is needed for EVERY track. Michelin has done pretty well in F1 this year and didn't have problems at LeMans (no more than anyone else). It's gotten to the point that tire companies have to test 365 days a year and at every track. No one can afford that. Michelin will not get hurt by this, and will probibly win a couple of times this season. The only ones hurt were the fans and the sport, due to egos and politics.

Having raced myself at Indy just before the F1 race, a chicane would have caused chaos and IMO alot more danger....perhaps not more than running on faulty tires...but still a risk.

A chicane at that turn could be made by using concrete retaining walls or cones.

If they used cones, its just a matter of time until drivers start knocking them down and shorting the course..ie increasing their speeds with each lap. If concrete was used, drivers wont shortcut the course but there is now yet a new object that can be hit....(F1 drivers running into walls you ask?).

Also consider the brake zone is different, passing may now be possible in a place that was never considered...plus the set up on the cars would have changed as well as downforce.

This all reminds me of a Formula Mazda race that took place at PPIR that involved a chicane & an oval track. A friend almost died due to (in their opinion) a poorly placed cement barrier. Thank god for Hans devices.

But other than that, Ive raced at oval/infield tracks like PPIR, PIR, Homestead, Texas & Vegas with Chicanes. It is possible. But its not something that you really want to change 10 mins before a race.
