As some may know, I have a pristine '84 512BBi that I do use on the weekends in the warmer months. Problem is, I am pretty overprotective of it and my insurance prevents me from using it that much anyway. I am currently restoring a '67 E-type roadster that will not be done for a few years - it is being rebodied now and every single part of this car needs to be rebuilt or replaced (not running since '76).

I would like to buy a more useable sports car to sit inbetween the Ferrari and Jaguar. A friend wants to sell me his '80 911 sc coupe which will need the usual updates and paint. I also have located another '67 E-type coupe that I am also considering. I know they are two very different cars, but I always wanted both a XKE open and closed car (and also a 911). I have driven plenty of 911's but have never driven a fully sorted e-type. If I bought the e-type coupe, I would probably put webers on it, upgrade the suspension, lower it, wider tires and generally make it more sportive than what I plan to do with the open car.

Can someone with e-type expereince help give me a perspective on these cars? I would hate to buy the xke and upgrade it only to find it is disappointing, especially since I already will have the roadster.

    Opinions please......Thanks

Get a different insurance policy and drive the Boxer more... It does you no good sitting in your garage while you pay insurance on it month after month... Warmer months...? The Boxer will run BETTER in the winter...!

Tinker with the British thing when you have time, but drive the Boxer everyday... You'll thank me for it... :)

Go with the 911. That is a great set up of cars, Jag, F-car, 911!!! It does not get much better than that!

i have had alot of collector and sports cars.check out my website and ask questions about any of them. racervic.com the extras section contains what i own currently.i would suggest an 86-88 3.2 carrera as a great choice.they can be bought for cheap, extremely robust, very fast, great roadholding and parts are relatively inexpensive
i think you will be disappointed with the jag if you hop it up.they are not very strong to start out with and what you will end up with is a noisy, bumpy, marginal back road toy.

A few years back I spent quite a bit of time looking for a good e type coupe and even the best of them, with upgraded susp and some performance bits added were, as you say, lacking as a fun driver.

I bought a 59 Corvette Convertible. It sounds great, drives just fine in a straight line and really attracts a huge amount of attention. It's easy to maintain and it's to the point where its value is really stable regardless of how much I drive it.

Not if he gets an Aston Martin, then it'll be even better. It'll be the best collection.

Great guys - really appeciate the feedback - keep it coming, esp from the XKE crowd. I know the 911 is a more useable, modern car with a slew of upgrade potential. Since it is a 3.0, I would consider building a short stroke 3.2 from the motor to get more out of it -or at least reprofile the CIS cams. I hate the cable clutch, but a good 3.2 with the G50 box is at least double.

The XKE coupe is more a love affair for me - I honestly can say I like it's lines as much as my roadster - this particular one is a late '67 with open headlights but with the pure series 1 interior (which I prefer) and no rust! I have read that guys who upgrade these can really transform them, but it still remains a top heavy cruiser of sorts. They did race them at LeMans and are somewhat popular on the SCCA circuit.

Not that is matters greatly, but the 911 will never be worth more than what I would put into it (probaly less) whereas the series 1 XKE is on the uptick and is just plain better lookng in my opinion than the 911. What it comes down to is drivability, so fire away.

Just to play devil's advocate: the 911 will never be very valuable, and that might be a good thing. You can drive it like you stole it and not worry about hurting its value, because it isn't a collectible rarity like an E-Type. And actually I think Jaguar always called them E-types and never XKE....

Another point. A recently-viewed "Top Gear" looked at the E-Type and Aston Martin DB5. The Jag was heavily modified to improve its handling and it was still not particularly fast around their test track. The DB5 was stock, and recorded the slowest time ever seen on their test track. A good indication of how far vehicle dynamics have come.

FWIW I have a soft spot for the 911 just because a 1974 Carrera was the family car when I was learning to drive, back in 1976. Wow, I am OLD!
