I recently had a 360 f1 clutch changed at an independent shop who came highly recommended. I asked if they could read the clutch life a few months down the road to make sure there are no problems and it's not burning up extremely fast due to adjustment issues, etc.

The shop owner told me he did not have the Ferrari computer necessary to read F1 clutch wear, (which I believe from my reading here is an SD2).

My question is, if he does not have the computer capable of reading clutch wear, would he have been able to properly adjust the clutch/f1 system and reset the clutch wear reading back to 0%? I recall reading somewhere that the f1 cars must be hooked up to the computer following the clutch change.

every one here says that you can NOT change the clutch without the SD2 computer. You are supposed to get some settings before changing the clutch and reset settings after changing the clutch, along with setting the PIS point (some early cars did not have adjustable PIS). You recall correctly.

Thanks. I didn't think to ask before-hand because I assumed he had the SD2 and he said he'd done many f1 clutch changes. I didn't learn that he didn't have it until I questioned him about checking clutch wear down the road.

I'll have to take it to the dealer and see if they can ensure it's set up properly.

Is it possible to set it up after installing the clutch? Mike mentioned getting information from the existing set up but I'm not sure what that would be as everything is new including the sensors. I'm not sure you would want to drive it without having the proper set up done but I guess if you local indie mechanic did the work you could have it flat-bedded to a local dealer to finish the work (although I'm sure they wouldn't be too happy losing out on lucrative work). I guess if they were really malevolent they could set it incorrectly -- ensuring an early replacement -- possible?

I've looked at the clutch info on an SD2 and beyond the clutch wear % and the PIS, I really don't see anything else to reset. And the clutch wear % is info only and not relevant to proper clutch operation as far as I can tell. If this is incorrect, someone please chime in.

PIS is a must. As the clutch wears down, the PIS is adjusted by the mechanic. I imagine that if a worn out clutch is replaced, then the new clutch would be much thicker and would engage much too early. It may even drag to point of overheating which would cause disk expansion and even more dragging. Not sure what the TCU would do but it would probably drop to N. I believe that the early F1 cars had the ability to set PIS without the SD2. So the later ones will need an SD2 to set it. Might as well reset the % wear too.

Victor- Believe you can also set disc thickness.

I just figured that would be 100% for new clutch. Didn't see an actual parameter to set a fixed thickness value. I'll have a look again this week.

Early cars (1999 - 2002) had a "self learn" function. I installed the CS TCU for that very reason so that the tech could set the PIS. Initially he had it set too tight so that when cold and at a higher idle speed it moved on its own. Took it back and he reset it.

I thought it was 1999 - 2000 that had the self learn. My 2002 has a PIS setting but I'm not sure when it changed.

This tool apparently can calibrate the new 360 clutch / F1 system, has anyone here used it? Familiar with it, as alternative to the SD2 / SD3 method?
