I came across this statement in the 84 308 QV Owners manual:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Is there an "oil pressure adjustment procedure" for the 308? Equally as strange, and according to the other statement in the above snippet, an oil pressure of 1psi would be considered normal becasue it is lower than 64. Did they mean to say that 64 psi was the minimum acceptable pressure at idle (higher than 64psi)? Who translated these manuals?

For some reason I cannot see pictures when you post them. I can see everyone else's pictures.

    Pretty confusing isn't it.

This is typical of the way manuals are written.

I think the intent would have been that while 64 psi is normal pressure when driving, something less than that will be the case at idle.

As far as pressure adjustment, there is a relief valve that controls the maximum allowable pressure (cold engine, extra thick oil). This reduces the possibility of bursting the oil cooler or oil filter. It can be adjusted if necessary but will have no effect on what the pressure is at idle when warmed up.

It is the Italian-to-English translation that is the problem here.

Never mind, figured it out. If you use the "attach" function, people have to be logged into www.ferrarichat.com (instead of one of the other methods) to see it.

That's correct, the 'adjustment' being referred to is the upper limit on the max oil pressure. One of the WSMs has a clearer description.

In practice it's setup by the factory & I've never heard of it needing to be changed. The 'adjustment' is to change the thickness of a shim washer that changes the preload on the bypass valve spring.

Is there a better way to have images show up inline with the text, rather than at the end? Most times when I post pictures, I like it so show up before the text that describes or comments on it. I'm always up to learning better ways of doing stuff! You have to when you own a Ferrari.

Great explaination, thanks. It makes much more sense when described as an oil pressure bypass adjustment rather than the stating "the oil pressure is adjustable" like the manual's translation states.

I think I know what they mean by "adjustable"

Clearly the factory set these cars up so the driver could adjust his oil psi to zero by turning to the right very hard and very fast.

Warning: the oil sump baffle (see other threads about this item) will automatically disable this feature. DO NOT INSTALL THIS ITEM UNLESS YOU WANT THE AUTO OIL PSI ADJUSTER TURNED OFF!!

The spring itself can also be changed. The first two or three years of production of the 328/Mondials (1986 to 1988?) had a recall to correct excessively high oil pressures. The fix was to change out the spring.

You are correct and I think the TSB included 308 QVs as well. I changed the spring to the newer style just in case.
