adjusting door latch

My drivers door on my 1995 355 has come out "whack". The latch mechanism on the body came loose and I have been chasing the correct alignment ever since. I am wondering if anyone can explain the proper way to adjust these and why the actual bolt/stud/etc that the door latches on needs to be adjustable as well. I see the lower bolt allows the whole deal to move in different directions but that main stud can rotate as well. Any insight would be appreciated. I went thru the shop manual CD that Daniel sent me but couldn't find anything. Thanks
