I want to begin to use my laptop for business reasons, and I have a 12.1" iBook Notebook from Apple. What are the benefits of the Powerbook compared to the iBook? Anything I should be wanting in the Powerbook business wise?

    Thank you.

The 15" powerbook can accomodate more RAM (2GB) and has a MUCH higher resolution display: 1440x900 vs only 1024x768. On the pwerbook I can work on 2 page documents side by side. On the ibook I can't even fit a SINGLE page at an editable res.

Also, the ibook will only mirror the video display out the RCA VIDEO OUT, the powerbook can duel-screen it (could be important for presentations.)

The iBook is cheaper, though not much cheaper once you option it up to what the powerbook comes with standard.

Are there any big speed differences? My iBook cost me nearly $1700 by the time I optioned it out, and recieved it in the mail. More than a basic PowerBook. Is a Powerbook so much better for business purposes that I should sell my new iBook, lose some money, and buy the PowerBook?

What am I missing out on? This is not used for graphic reaons, even though I do mess with Photoshop every now and then. Used for Spreadsheets, records, etc.

    Thanks.

I use both Mac and Windoze. Mac by choice, Windoze because that's what we have at work.

It all depends on what you want to do. For the home user, the "Software isn't available" line is BS. Hardcore gamers probably don't want a Mac, but otherwise, how many programs do you need? Excel is the #1 spreadsheet, it's available for Mac and Windoze, and files created on one platform work fine on the other. Ditto Word for word processing, or Powerpoint for presentations. I guess there are also some internet plug in's that don't support Mac, so if you're heavily into porn chat rooms and the like, Windoze may be the ticket for you.

If you like to do anything with video, music, or photography, Macs rule. The programs they come with out of the box are more than enough for most home users, and the pro programs available are often the industry standards.

Anyone who tells you a Mac is hard to use has never used one. Windoze is as good as it is because it's copied the Mac interface over the years. (Yes, I know the Mac OS is a Xerox[?] rip off itself...) Macs are plug and play. Buy a new hard drive, mouse, whatever, plug it in, it works. Maybe MS has reached this level now, I don't know. But if they have, they've only finally caught up.

For most home users, either system will work just fine. For what I do, Macs work better. (One advantage Macs have - virtually no one writes viruses for them.) I'm sure there are specific examples that can be made to "prove" either system is "better" than the other, but overall, they both work well for 99% of what everyone does.

So in the end, buy whichever one blows your skirt up and be happy with it. But... I can tell you a Mac is so easy to use, and stable enough that you may even find yourself taking the time to spell out all three letters of a word... :)

While there are speed differences, they're both fast enough the computer waits for you a lot more than you wait for it. It doesn't sound like you're doing anything that taxes the processing power of either one.

There will always be something faster and sexier out there, it's the nature of the beast. If you're happy with the way your current computer works, stop worrying about it. Next time you're near a Comp USA or Apple store, go in and try them both out side by side, then make your choice.

I love my Apple and it has never crashed in the three years I've owned it. When I have a question about how to do something on my Mac I go to the mall and ask a real person, and they show me. If I need "notes" on the procedure they e-mail it to me from their computer while I stand there. Call Dell, speak to "Bob" who loves baseball, the national pastime in Bombay, after a 42 minute wait to speak to a custoemr service representitive. There is no comparision in customer service and ease of use, Apple wins, the problem is they are 2x the cost of a comparable PC.

If you're considering buying a new powerbook, I would wait until MacWorld opens in a couple of weeks. Rumor is that they're announcing new duel core Intel chipped Powerbooks. If you don't want a new one, the price of current top of the line machines will drop like a rock.

Get down to an apple store and play with one. They're great machines, and much easier to use than Wintel.

They also just 'work' here's an example: I needed to print something at a friend of mine's house. His PC wasn't seeing his printer anymore, and after an hour of fiddling with it, downloading drivers, etc. (unsuccessfully I might add) I finally just connected my powerbook, hit "Apple-P" for "print" and selected the printer, and it spit my document out.

Notice nowhere did I download any drivers, or for that matter did I even 'set up' or 'add' or 'configure' a printer!

I wouldn't bother selling if you already have the iBook. The Powerbooks are only maybe 40% faster in terms of processor/ram/bus speeds. Tops. 1.3Ghz G4 vs 1.67Ghz, you'll barely notice.

The ONLY thing that might make me ditch an iBook is the screen resolution. Spreadsheets/etc are a PITA to view on the 12" low-res iBook screen!

Also, my mac laptop has been RUNNING for (looks) 14 days straight now. When I go somewhere, I just close it, it puts itself to sleep (ie 'suspend') in about half a second.

When I open it back up, it's awake before I have the lid all the way open.

"Suspend" on my brother's brand new Toshiba crashes XP.

(And I have 2GB RAM and work on 70MB 14mpixel digital camera files.)

MacWorld is a computer show where Apple will often debut new models. In this case, it's rumored new Powerbooks will be intro'd there, meaning the price on current models will drop.

U B down wit it now, yo?

Mac for home and work. Win when and only if the job demands it.

    Win = Hate!

Sure. Every year at Macworld in San Francisco Steve Jobs announces some new product, software, ipod, etc.... When they announce the new 'thing', the price of the old 'thing' (which was 'top of the line' until that moment) drops pretty fast. You can pick up new 'old' powerbook for a lot less than you would have the day before.

Until recently Apple used PowerPC chips in there computers. Currently the most powerful Powerbook has a 1.67 Ghz processor speed. It's also a 'single' processor. If the rumors are true, the new Intel Powerbooks will, at a minimum be faster single processors over 2 Ghz, and at best will be 3 Ghz dual processors (or faster). In either case, the processors will be faster, run cooler and use less power = longer battery life.

I have a 1.5 Ghz Powerbook with 2 Gigs of RAM. It's a year old and powerful enough to run a digital camera on a location shoot, process photoshop images, check email, etc.. without trouble.

The Mac vs. PC debate again......

I thought this was about the PB and the ibook.....

    Get the PB -

Now the Mac vs. PC thing.... OSX is great very easy and fun operating system. But, (cover your eyes Apple lovers) yes, they do lockup and crash from time to time. The pc does also, but it seems xp has gotten very stable over the years. I like them both and lean a little towards the Mac because of design. Both might have repair issues so back up your data.

Oh, and yes I have a Dell XPS, XPS2 Laptop, XPS Gen 5, Sony Viao, Mac Cube, Mac Mini at home......
