New guy here with some good knowledge of 328s but still expanding the education.... Looking at a 86 328 with 70K miles. In last year had pretty extensive restoration. Things included:
    1. Engine Out: Heads removed, but no rebuild. Surfaces machined (probably not valve seats though) for re-assembly..
    2. Fuel lines and hoses replaced (gas tank hoses etc.. almost anything rubber throughout the car)
    3. Everything clutch related replaced.
    4. All coolant lines new
    5. New stainless brake lines, Rotors turned. New pads.
    6. Roof and door gasgets where needed.
    7. Much painting and powdercoating everywhere (engine and underneath: Fender wells etc)
    8. Full suspention resto. New bushings and shocks. Suspention parts repainted..
    9. Interior removed, dis-assembled and re-dyed.
    10. A full major of course...
    11. Front area re-sprayed for stone chips.

Car drives (to me) better than the two others I have driven with almost half the miles. Cost of this work would compare to a major portion of the value of the car (without saying figures publicly). Is this easily a mid $40s car? What is it on potential re-sale a few years from now? In your opinion...

not a thing wrong with a 70,000 mile 328, especially one that has been well serviced. Those are THE ones to get.

You gave your won answer: it drives better than 2 half-mileage cars.

We all put way too much emphasis on mileage, it is far more important what the miles consisted of. It's quite easy to wear a car out in 5k miles, but a car driven intelligently can go forever, well, almost:)

Half the cars out there have been driving around with the speedo unplugged for years. Been rolled back. Been manipulated an any other way possible.

    Condition, condition condition!

Out of curiousity .. why the head remachining? Overheated and warped? And why not a valve job while the heads were off and available?

+1. Big red flag. There must have been a reason to tear the motor down since 3.2 motors still run very strong at 70K. If it was overheated wraping the heads, I would pass. They should have been replaced. If emissions is an issue where you live, I would make sure it passes. Machining the surfaces would raise the compression ratio which could have some consequences.

Re: rotors. Once they are resurfaced, they will likely warp again quickly and are of no use for track events since they will heat up more quickly now. New ones are not very expensive.

It seems like the owner took some cost saving short-cuts to get the repair done: heads removed without doing other "while you're in there", leather re-dyed (never a fan of that). So while it sounds good, there maybe some skeletons in the closet waiting for you.

Get a PPI and let us know...
