I am the original owner of a low mileage "t" and I can attest that a properly maintained 28 years old Mondial has proven so far to be a very reliable and enjoyable car. However I have the complete records, about 5 inches thick, from the original invoice to the latest service at Ron Tonkin.

I find it strange that the Mondial you're looking at, Joe, comes with no paperwork of any kind? Did you run a Carfax?

I'm not sure a Carfax or a PPI are worth pursuing at the point. Without records, one has to assume that it will need a major ++ for piece of mind. I was provided a 1 (yes 1) page sevice record showing an oil and brake fluid change by a broker (hint: not a F-car specialist) after removal from long-term storage. Without the records or being able to chat with the caretaker of the collection, you have to assume the worst case for service in this deal. Just not for me at the moment with other documented cars out there. Honestly I'm shocked they were willing to let me test drive the Mondial while potentially having a timing belt that would make Milli Vannilli proud :)

Why would you even consider a "broker" at all? Just by direct. There are very little margins on good Mondials to begin with.

rimmie, I concur with all my colleagues here. The museum piece should be acquired by one interested in maintaining it as a 'museum' piece. There are many fine Mondial examples that have a much better history that is ready to go right now. Save yourself some money and time - buy a well maintained (and documented) Mondial t for 1/2 the price and enjoy the summer! Now if money and time are no object, and 20-30k miles of patina is something you shun, then by all means - purchase and drop it off Scuderia Rampante for 3-4 months.

    Two choices:

    1. Buy a museum piece of history, never drive it, push it on a tow truck and transport it everywhere. Wash and wax before the show. Done.

    or

    2. Buy it to drive it, then before you even turn the engine over, transport it to a good mechanic for a total engine out service, and replacement of all the rubber components (all hoses, all tires). I would leave the bushings alone unless there are signs of deterioration. Engine out will need to replace all betls, idler bearing, water pump (must do). You will likely need to replace the entire brake ABS hydraulics (sorry about that).

Choice 2 will cost you $20K from a good indi. $30K from Scuderia Rampante.

If you plan to drive I would instead pick up an example with 20k miles and good service records. Price would probably be 1/2 and you would know what additional maintenance is required. My 430 had no previous records so I had a good PPI and pushed a much lower price. Good luck regardless.

Just a point of interest. What kind of service record would you expect from a 1k mileage car other than a first service from the dealer ?
It shouldn't be hard to trace back where it was originally purchased from as a new car.
The only thing of interest other than that history would be recommissioning service, which should have been extensive.
It would seemingly have to been "in storage" a lot longer than a decade if it's 26+yrs old and has such low mileage

Annual service and inspections, factory recalls...... If you’re crazy enough to have it on a plinth and run it for 40 miles a year you’re probably crazy/sensible enough to keep the service warranty and schedule!?!?

    Alternatively, sod all;-)

    Hello,

I have not chimed in for a while but I wanted to share my experience. Also hello to all the new members... it’s been a while.

I bought a 1989 T with 11000 miles about 9 years ago. I bought it with service Records of at least one engine out service. It drove about 1000 miles after that it was stored till I bought it. The belts were to me changed because of the time, it was I think about 5 years. I decided to dive it slowly and do the service in the spring. You can see my posts if they are still there. The car 16000 miles and besides a few minor issues it’s been great!

During service I flushed all fluids and oils, upgraded Hill tensioner, new belts and changed the water pump just in case.

    Good Luck.

I just went thru (and still am) getting my superb condition garage queen (no use for 10 years; barely any miles for 13 years before that); it’s been a pain, lots of fuel related issues...just got my first joyrides this week after 5 months of hair pulling, only pushed it to 66% or so....some relatively simpler things to get sorted out...looking back, I would have listening to some fundamental opinions earlier and prevented lots of pain, but in all it’s quite enjoyable! ‘82 Mondial 8

Fortunately, the 8 is the simplest of all.
