I drive a 1990 Porsche 944 S2. There's an old guy in the neighborhood who's been pestering me for years to sell him my car. He's owned several 944s in the past and he loves them. My car's got about 225K miles on it and while it's mechanically sound, the cosmetics are a little tired. It's been a good car.

He wants to give me his '97 Mercedes E320 as a straight trade. I'm going to look at the car this afternoon.

Thoughts, advice, inane comments and unhelpful contributions are all welcome.

If the Merc is in nice condition, then it would seem like a no brainer to me. There is nothing too special about either of these cars, and I think the Merc would be a pretty nice car to trade the 944 for.

    Just my .02

    I wouldnt.

I am thinking of the market up here by the way. That 944 is much more rare and nicer. The E320 is a great driver but not rare nor collectable and there are a billion of them around :)

Curious, is the Benz 4-matic? Miles?

Why would you want to? Is it trading just to trade?

I personally would much prefer the 944. Perhaps sell it to him and buy a different sports car?

Yea, how many miles on the Benz and what condition is it in? How long have you had the 944?

I owned a '90 944 S2 and think there were only about 500 coupes for US/CA market. But with other year 944's, I don't consider it too rare.

Think it up to you if want a larger or different type of car. Before you make the trade, have the Mercedes checked out, they like any Porsche, can be even more costly to repair when they are old and have many miles.

Well... If you want something different then your on the right track. MUST CHECK on the Merc are front spring perches. If there is ANY rust around the upper spring mounts (awful design that collects debris along the outside of the engine bay and the perch welds) then P A S S. Its worth it to remove the front wheels to check.

Seriously? A 225k mile 944? You think there is a book value for that? Probably not a reliable number at this point.
