Advice on adjust Capristo Twin Sound to correct lateral position

    Hello,
    As stated in the title, I have a Capristo Twin Sound on my ‘04 360, and it’s misaligned left to right. Once the system heats up, the drivers side outboard tip is rattling against the bumper grille under certain conditions, and it’s starting to wear into the chrome tip. Besides that, the misalignment is visually apparent and bothers me.
    If it makes a difference, I have Tubi headers, 200 cell sport cats and the Capsristo spring loaded exhaust mounting system.

    You can see the misalignment in both the position of the can relative to the trunk latch box, and air box, and more obviously in the position of the tips in the bumper grille.

    Is there a “best practice” of where to start and order of operations? I suspect that the lateral adjustment is produced by rotation of the cats? I assume I will have to loosen both the cats to headers, and cats to Capristo, and the left to right movement would be achieved by rotating the cats in whichever direction would produce lateral movement in the Capristo? I don’t know if this is correct, so I figured I would ask before I started messing with all the bolts and going through the wrestling match if I’m barking up the wrong tree.

    Assuming the same setup as the 430, if you let off the cat inlets and rotate the cats it will change the distance between their centres, the centres on the silencer are fixed so it’s a matter of matching them.

    Thanks Mike, that’s what figured. I wanted to makes sure I was headed in the right direction before disassembling everything and fumbling around aimlessly.

    I noticed in your last picture that the back of the exhaust can is very close to the horizontal framework. I had the exact same problem with my 360 (Capristo Level 2). When the engine warmed up, everything expanded and the exhaust can would knock against that framework and dent it in a couple of places. To fix it, I had to remove the exhaust, cut notches in the front end of the pipes where they met with the cat (see picture 1) so I could slide the pipes further forward without the ends of the pipes hitting the weld material for the O2 sensor mounts. But then I discovered that the four slots in the large stainless plate that the exhaust can bolts to were not long enough (front to back), so I had to take the plate to a machine shop and have the slots elongated. Another problem I ran into was that the exhaust would move laterally (like yours) but in my case this was because the two vertical risers that are welded to the bottom of the can had no gussets, so both brackets were bent and kind of folded over. I showed the problem to Carl (of Scuderia Transmission Repair fame) and he fabricated gussets for each of the two mounting brackets, completely solving the problem. I sent a picture of his work to Antonio [Capristo] and noticed that shortly afterwards, all of his exhaust systems had this same gusset feature. If you have one of the earlier exhausts, I would double check those risers.

    You can adjust the tail pipe height a little by altering the expansion bracket spring loading, but be sure you can move the bolts in the slots by hand when cold so you know it will move when hot.

    Thanks for the explanations and pics! I have heard about the can being too close to the frame before, and can see that mine is very close as well. As such, I have been careful to be observant of its position after full-temp drives, and I’ve never observed it touching yet. I did notice that I would’ve like to have gotten the can pipes further onto the cats while installing, but wasn’t able to. If that becomes an issue, I’ll remove and cut the same relief slots. Hopefully I don’t have to.
    I purchased my exhaust last year, and the spring loaded mounting plates, which offer several inches of fore and aft movement for expansion and contraction, and IIRC, lateral movement in the vertical mounting brackets between the can and plate. So perhaps due in part to your feedback, it seems they fixed this design in recent times.

    I suspect a cat adjustment will solve my lateral misalignment. Now to find a day when I’d rather be taking the car apart rather than driving it… :rolleyes:

    With the system fitted you should find that when cold the bolts should be fully forward in the slots, expect to see about 18 mm movement to the rear when hot
