Advice on disposing of large Ferrari model collection.

    A good friend passed away a number of years ago. He was quite a Ferrari enthusiast and had several over the years. He was also a collector of memorabilia. The subject of this post is his model collection. His widow has finally been able to catalog it and is looking for the easiest way to dispose of the collection. I have volunteered to help. There are over 650 Ferrari models, most in boxes. Most are 1:43 scale. The most financially sound approach would probably be to sell them one at a time on eBay (a daunting task for her) or perhaps sell the collection as a whole there. Prior to taking that sort of action. I have decided to post this forum. I would appreciate any advice on the subject, including getting a rough idea of the value and other alternatives for selling them. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have a spreadsheet listing the models. PM me and I’ll email it.

    there was a thread a little while ago with someone selling all their models and they posted them here and he said they were pretty much gone so i guess that worked

    During the Monterey car weekend that is now about 2 weeks long there is a model and memorabilia sale. You might look into participating.

    But he wants to sell the collection as a whole, not seperate--May be tough to do...anywhere

    I think there is a waiting list to be a vendor at Monterey if that is what you are suggesting. Also getting a table there is extremely expensive.

    I think your best bet is to sell groups of models on here as there are a lot of collectors and then unload the rest on ebay.

    thats a very big collection, would you better selling of in parts
    like f1cars, road cars, and so on in lots

    THe fact they would appear to be mint in oroginal boxes which are in good condition will add significant value to the collection to major collectors (depending on the year etc).

    In the UK there are specialist collectors directories of last values made at auction etc (sorry cant remember who does them) which help in valuations.

    There will be something similar kicking around in the US I am sure.

    on race cars look for the tobacco sponsorship on F1 diecasts as this boosts the desirability and value a great deal (sponsorship on models has been banned for some years in most countries) a 1:43 autoart schumi ferrari with marlboro decals on can reach 4-10 times the price of the same item without them to the right collector.

    If possible, you should put together a spreadsheet listing everything...for each item, its scale, manufacturer, box or no box, condition, color, etc.

    It'll be quite a task but it should be done.
