One of the things I'd like to get to this winter is having my exhaust tips re-chromed.

    How would I remove them?

How could I get em back on straight, level, etc , etc.?

I was thinking about a jig or some sort in order to get them back on level, etc..
I dont want to change the tips, I want to maintain originality.

    Thanks

I looked at replacing the tips on my '83 Mondial (too rusted for rechrome), I planned on cutting thru the spot welds at the ends of the tips. It looked to me that the ID's of the tips were a "slide-on" fit to the OD's of the inside pipes. That would mean alignment was a given. My conclusions are based upon inspection only, as I "copped-out", and just installed after-mkt tips over them, held on with S.S. sheet metal screws at the bottom..

That's correct, the tips are slide on over the inners, spot welded at the base. I had my chrome ones replaced with stainless slightly longer. Haven't installed it yet, maybe Monday. Here's how it looks.

That's got to be the best way. Where did you find the S.S. tubes with the right I.D.?

I took my exhaust and cats to a shop that fabs-up stainless turbo set-ups for Jap cars, they do rallye suspensions, exhausts, etc. They are well respected as a high quality shop so they did very nice work and had the stainless tubing in stock. The tips are slightly larger than original, the pipes through the cats are smaller diameter, same as the headers. Cheers, Dino

I replaced one of mine that was dented. Ordered a new one from Maranello Cons. UK, cut the 3 tack welds with a dremel cut off wheel. Tack welded the new part on with a mig, simple.

Did you regular steel Mig wire, or stainless?

I should add that I chose to go up one size on the tips, they're NOT exactly as original inside diameter but they slip over the part that stays on the muffler. They are also longer, that's the look I want, even though I'm a fan of keeping it original, some small tweaks work for me. Of course, I've basically eliminated originality by welding up the side lights, pushing in the front bumper, adding Euro lenses and 16" rims, although they are Ferrari rims and the owner's manual from 1982 does list them as available. I think those original mufflers last quite a long time, it's the tips that go. Any input on those original mufflers? I also bought all new bolts, washers, nuts and donuts from Ricambi for the re-assembly.

Ok, I have the dremel and cut-off wheels, no problem.

Did you remove the exhaust to tack weld or not?

    Thanks.

Okay, muffler is back on, cats are on, those are the gutted cats, and diaper is restored, just sitting loose for these pictures, BUT..... I reached inside, put the shifter in Neutral, touched the key and she fired up in less than one second without even touching the gas, man I love that fuel injection, even though most of you are down on it, AND.......it runs beautifully, slightly deeper, throatier sound at idle but I couldn't rev it up inside the shop in cold Winter, although I'm sure excited about the way it's looking and will sound at higher rpm. New paint is curing and polishing has begun at the front, looks great! These stainless tips are slightly larger and about 1.5 inches longer than original, just perfect to my taste! Ciao.
