2 months ago I awoke my long sleeping K-mart lawn mower from its 15 year sleep under the porch. Remarkably, it started right up. I always run carbs dry...

anyway, tried to cut grass today and it won't start.

It's a goner, 5 years old when stored, all controls broken off over the years, I had to stop it by shorting it with a screwdriver etc.

Time for a new one. No PPI on this deal if you were wondering, nope, I'll really drop the hammer on this.

I have a total of maybe 1/4th acre of grass, but a lot of elevation change between little plots, so I need something smallish, light and easy to push up hill. No bagger, no fancy anything needed, not that kind of yard.

I have a knee jerk urge to buy a Honda, but I'm seeking advice on what kind of lawn mower I should get.

Your yard is about the same as mine.

Go to Sears and get the base model Craftsman.

    http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=LAWN&pid=07138765000

This is basically the same as mine, got it used from my wife's grandma's estate. I don't do anytning but change oil, filter, plug, sharpen blade, it's always started on the first pull for the 4 years i've had it. Can't beat that for $139.

Plus, free shipping on it now. You could have it shipped and take picutres of it coming off the truck. ;)

    Lawn Boy's are 2 cycle aren't they?

I am sure WalMart and Home Depot are blowing mowers out to make room for snow throwers and Christmas trees so there should be plenty of bargains.

They used to be. They used to all have aluminum decks too. Now they use Briggs, Tecumseh, or Honda engines, and only a few of them have aluminum decks.

I spent many long, boring hours behind a classic Lawn-Boy mower in my youth.

When I get a lawn mower the first thing I do is zip tie the dead-man handle down and remove all the safety stuff that gets in the way. Does everybody do that?

Yeah, between that and the outboard motors on our boats, I'm sure I still have 2-cycle oil in my lungs.

So in other words they use the same generic engines as everyone else, which would make me ask, why would a Lawn Boy last any longer than a competitor's mower using the same OEM engine?

I use a bungee for the dead man switch when it is dry out. If the lawn is even 2% damp with an increased risk of slipping, I remove the bungee.

It's been 15 years since you last mowed?

I have a Honda cutter, and the frikken thing is a BEYOTCH to start ALL THE TIME.

All my other **** that has Tecumseh, B&S always start. I would have thought the Honda would be the easiest to start, most reliable engine. It's a POS.

My power washer has a B&S engine. I ran it for 5 hours straight until it seized, then I dumped in a little Marvel Mystery Oil into the gas and it's been going strong ever since then.

How about hiring someone to cut the lawn for you? It must be pretty high if you haven't cut it in 15 years!!!

You can get a riding mower and put in a Yamaha Genesis engine or something of that sort.

I've had a Honda self propelled for about 15 years now and it has never let me down. Always starts on first or second pull. Every few years I check to see if there is any oil still in it. I can't get rid of it. It has become part of the family.

Go to Sear but the cheapest one you can find,

Bring it home, don't put any fuel in it.

    Call a lawn service.

I do the same. I also zip tie the self propel drive engage handle, and attatch a note to the mower with my address that says "send help."

Same here, we live for danger......

I ordered a used mower several weeks ago and the driver disappeared in a blue cloud...

    It never made it. :(

3/4 acres with a weed eater is a SUMBIEYOTCH!

I'm thinking a herd of goats, now.....

I mow alot. I've had two riders in the last decade. Anyway for a pushmower I like the craftsman mowers I have a 5.5hp one right now and its still running great after 5+ yrs and they are affordable.

Uro, find a neighborhood kid and pay him 3-5$ to cut your grass. Thats what I am looking to do. Problem is, there just don't seem to be a lot of kids around these days, at least not outside...

What they need is a videogame that involves cutting grass. Then kids would do it for free, for practice, and because its cool :).

I can't wait until my kids turn 4, I figure 2 of them should have no problem pushing the mower around... ;).

    Wait for a Ferrari mower.

Geez, you're a cheapskate. I got $5/hr cash back in 1984. No wonder you're not getting any takers. ;)

I have to wait until the boys are older, as there's a nasty hill in our front yard that I don't think they'll be able to cut for a while. They should be able to cut the back in a couple of years, not to mention picking up the dog crap. What's fair for allowance money, 5 cents per turd?

Yeah, I can't find anybody for 5$ yet - but haven't looked hard. My lot is HEAVILY landscaped and mulched, so there isn't much grass. Best thing I ever did! Mulch is your friend. Takes about 30 minutes to cut my grass, figure 5$ is fair :). I don't have acres like uro does!

We got quotes from lawn services and they want 60$ a cut, and recommend it 2 times per week. I understand they have to drive out, bring equipment, etc - with a small lawn it doesn't pay to have others do it.

If a neighborhood kid could do 10 lawns on a saturday morning, they would make 50-100$. Not bad!!! I am surprised more kids don't volunteer to do this, honestly. Its good money, and beats working a 40 hour week in the local mall to earn the same amount of cash. Figure 40 hours at 5$ is 200$, but after taxes, etc its about $130...or 3$ per hour. Better off at 10$ per hour cutting grass!
