So, a couple of weeks ago I noticed a bit of oil leaking from the area where a plug wire boot meets the valve cover. I wiped it off, reseated the boot, and went for a quick drive. When I checked it again, there was nothing. So, I decided to leave it be until I had a chance to tackle the project...

Well, today I got into it and was immediately taken aback. What do you think?

Not surprised to hear... I guess the next question should be: "What all should I attempt to replace while fixing the valve cover gasket?"

Not that it will fix it (OK, very slim chance), but you might as well tighten down your head/valve-cover bolts just in case there is an easy fix at hand (prior to yanking the motor or replacing gasket in situ).

I read a thread on replacing the O-rings without removing the camshafts. It required cutting them and re-splicing them. How do you all feel about that method?

I'm not really sure of what is causing that much leakage......may be the valve cover gasket as others have suggested. I was simply pointing out that there are at each sparkplug, o-rings'....whether or not these o-rings' have anything to do with oil leakage can be answered, hopefully by one who is more qualified to give an opinion.

The only seal between the valve cover and head is the gasket, so it probably needs replacing. Be careful, as they tend to slide around. The good gaskets have a line of sealant on them, so you'll just need to clean the area well. I'm assuming that the oil is on the outside of the plug and only gets on the electrode when it's being removed. If it's in the cylinder, that's not good at all!
