I don't let ATC do anything out of the box with me unless IMC. Leaving DFW I usually don't pick up IFR until I leave Class B and climb closer to my cruise altitude. I listen to approach and they're always warning the arrivals as I climb through them. Also coming back they like to drop me down WAY out or route me crazy, they give me a crazy arrival and I cancel IFR and 90% of the time they come back willing to accommodate me.

    a PSA...

let a controller hitch a ride with you, many have no or very little time in a plane to see how things work on the other end. It gives them the pilots perspective. I started giving rides when a supervisor / senior controller asked over the com channel for the rookie controller ride and later coordinated it on the land line. It was much appreciated.

going VFR is a way of getting around the vectoring... that was the purpose of the performance arrivals and departures, I guess they have been deleted from the approaches... vectoring around a large TCA can add a lot of distance / time

I do the same in and out of these busy spaces when conditions permit but if you want to be above 18K' you don't have much choice. Even in and out of TEB I don't fool with VFR. Too much airspace and too many airplanes.

that's nothing ;), "unknown VFR traffic half mile intersecting at altitude". :D of course the overtaking under and over direct line stuff I think is most dangerous because of visibility. pretty sure I saved a short final accident between plane and helicopter as both on short final couldn't see each other as I was long final and they were heading for collision, so I spoke up.

On advisory over Florida all you hear is "VFR traffic XX O'Clock". It's constant.

Turbo not required at all. Going straight west out of Denver area could be an issue at times but there are alternate routes north or south. I've flown all over the west in a NA Mooney, cruising as high as 16k, regularly at 12-13. I think a NA Cirrus could do as well.

You can make anything work-- I've flown from Texas to Oregon in an open cockpit biplane. It's really just a question of how comfortable you want to be.

anyone familiar with these guys? I randomly got an email from them today. I don't know enough about the pricing to know if these quotes are deals or not.

they also have an "empty leg" section which might be useful between frequently traveled cities.

Like I said earlier in this thread. To be a jet broker all you need is a cell phone and a fancy website. None of these guy own the airplanes they charter. You call them and they call everyone they know with an airplane looking for a deal.

enter the trip into the instant quote box, there will be a pop up with base quotes separated by type of aircraft.

relevant to your knowledge, PDK-OPF in a turboprop (round trip) quoted started at $10,200 for a trip next week.

    I'm assuming that's a 1 way.

Is that a deal? I wish a knew. I think if you called 10 guys you'd get 10 different prices.

That one way trip in the Pilatus costs me about $2K when I add in all the costs of ownership ($1K an hour). If we're talking just gas is costs me less than $500. I could make some money if I chartered my airplane. HA.

OK so $10K round trip I would say is a great deal if you're on a new Pilatus. If you're on an old POS I would say it's not that great of a deal.

At this point it really just depends what equipment they're running. "Turboprop" could mean an old 6 seat Piper Meridien. Divide the cost among a few friends and it's cheaper than commercial.

Those guys are just a broker-- think of them as a high class (maybe) travel agent. All they're doing is making some phone calls, and you could make those calls as well if you wanted to take the time.

When you call a charter firm, ask for the "broker discount"-- 5% is standard in the business.

For the original poster in Austin there is Wing Aviation. They manage aircraft for owners in Austin and some other locations in Texas. Try them. At least they are not just brokering non-owned/non-managed aircraft. There likely are other operators at KAUS, don't know. There is someone at Austin Executive that has a pair of King Airs.

Shop around and negotiate. But I would start with companies that own and operate or at least are managing aircraft for owners.

They are a broker. They will put you on the first/cheapest plane they can find. You will have no idea who the real operator is unless you press them.

Here ya go guys. This is the Air Charter Guide. Not the friendliest web site to navigate but you can find your own charter operator by city etc. There is also a Empty leg live action screen on the left. Who ever you call, there is wiggle room in the quote.

I'm old enough to remember when the Air Charter Guide was a big phonebook-sized thing!
