You can call Gretchen at polar air in Fort Lauderdale she's very knowledgeable, you can also use r12a in an R12 system instead of converting to 134, it's much cheaper than original R12 and seems to work very well, for what I've been told 134 doesn't work as well in our cars is the original R12
She can be reached at 954-463-6610

Had my original sanden 508 compressor rebuilt last fall by Yellow Rose Distributors in TX. Eric Watson was the person who helped me with questions and advice and he was excellent:

R12a is an excellent refridgerant, but it is more or less propane, which with any leaks will be an explosion risk. R134 works fine, albeit it leaks through the old style hoses, ideally you have new barrier hoses installed with a 134 conversion. Not sure if the R12a also diffuses through old style hoses, probably not but I have not heard anyone weigh in on that. Most don't mention the R134 hose permeation issue, which requires a top up each year or two.

I am not aware of anyone who make plug and play replacement hoses, seems like those who do the change have custom work done. I would think there would be a market for hoses that are sized correctly with fittings installed that can be bolted in.

From what I understand, the molecules of R12a are larger than R12, so it shouldn't leak thru, the distributor even claims that R12a will sometime seal leaks in older systems.(?)
