Just bought my first LookSmart 1:18 model and I'm excited because I will have the opportunity for the drivers to sign the model in a few weeks.
This particular model comes on a red leather base with a clear plastic (acrylic? plexi?) top.
I'm assuming the best place for the drivers to sign will be the red leather base possibly in front of the car. Will a fine point Sharpie marker be the best tool for the job? Something else? What color to use?
Should I consider having them sign the display cover instead?
    Thanks!

You could use those Sharpie's ....OR....... also try using a paint pen with extra fine point. These are sold in good art supply stores & catalogs as well as at some of the few good hobby stores still standing. I use both for various projects & signings.

With either Sarpie or Paint pen, I would definitely try - experiment on a similar piece of leather first, but both should work well, and the paint pen might be a little more permanent as well. I have used both for signatures and other information on various surfaces, but have not tried leather yet.

Thanks M! I should have thought of the paint pens since I was just looking at them in a Michael's the other day.
I hope I still have my Recaro leather sample pieces to experiment on...

You're very welcome. If you don't mind, please let us know how this all works out. Good luck!

When the model arrives later this week I'll have a better idea of the texture that I'm dealing with and will then try to find some old wallet or purse or something with the same texture to experiment with. The Recaro samples I mentioned are smooth leather.

I use to send out small metal plates 6x3 cm and let them sign later I attach the signed signe to the base.
About the signed covers. I personally don't like them. Plus it dosen't matter how good they are protectet sooner or later you will have to clean them and it's always a "stress" to the signature and it will fate with the years. So for me underneath the cover is the way better place.

No room unfortunately. LookSmart already have a plate there.
I agree with your comments on the cover and the only other option is for the drivers to sign the roof of the car which I really don't want.

good choice. 1/43 scale is way to small to get a decent signature on them. Well in this case you can only let them sign the leather base or replace the looksmart sign with a signed one. By the way if anyone is interested I have a Valentino Balboni signed black Gallardo Balboni for sale.
