My fiance and I are planning to honeymoon in Italy (October or November 2009) and I am looking for some advice, suggestions, etc. I searched and found some tips on certain cities, etc and am now looking for more information.

We will be going for most likely 12 days (not including 2 days of travel). We want to hit the big cities (Rome, Milan, Venice, etc) and we will also spend 1-2 days in Maranello. My first question is, is public transportation the best way to go? Neither of us has driven in a foreign country before and want a relaxed, stress free time so I was thinking public transport might be good. Also, how feasible is this to do in 12 days? Obviously we are not going to see everything every city has to offer but is this a good amount of time in general? What kind of weather can we expect during this time? Any other tips/advice that you guys could give would be great! Thanks so much for the help.

All European public transport is good enough to avoid you renting a car... but depending on the level of flexibility you want, a car would be a nice touch for easier mobility... You will be willing to go more places by car, so you can really experience the atmosphere of the cities and life. One reason you will be more willing (by car) is because it will be as easy as getting a rental with a portable navigation, punching in the destination and simply driving and enjoying the scenery as you go along... A national rail will be better than driving if you go, for example, from Milan down to Rome, but for the local areas you will be in, for the longest period of time, a car might allow you two for a better experience within the 12 day stay. Public transport will become tiring since some destinations will prove not to be conveinently situated (Italy is an old country full of many different roads and routes, buildings and structures...)
With that said, public transport may be fine, if you were staying in one area of the country, because you would learn the scheduling and simply use the services according to your own agenda. You can fly into Milano and rent a car for the time you are in north Italy. You can drive to Maranello and Venice on two different occations, and enjoy better flexibility. I wouldnt bother driving down to Roma, becuase the train will be a nicer experience (especially if you only have 12 days.)

    Most feasable:
If you make your base in Milan, you can rent the car and keep it at your hotel in Milan, then take the train back from Rome to Milan and fly out of there instead of complicating things by switching bases. (that would be more costly anyway.) If you do this, you can make the most out of the 12 days without needing to stay longer...

The weather in Rome is inconsistant - I have only been there in the spring season, but the fall is reasonable, nothing to worry about. Milan can get cold, but I am not sure how cold it will get for November. . .

Fly into Modena and spend entire time in Maranallo, bring a lawn chair and a cooler. Spend entire time at the Ferrari test track, maybe if it rains go to another town to visit. ;) Break her in right from the beginning!

Absolutely. Break-in period is critical. Place cooler at sufficient distance so she gets used to getting up and bringing you drinks.

Thanks for the info! I definitely like the idea to keep a base somewhere. And no worries, we're spending some quality time in Maranello!
