So the last fool who worked on my transmission sealed up the transfer case cover with some kind of gasket (at least I think this means they were a l fool...). I've got all the bolts off the studs but I cannot for the life of me remove the cover.

Any advice how to break a soft gasket? It appears to be a red material, but it is very old, hard to tell for sure.

hmmmmm, I'm working on a 328 right now that, must be the same fool, used a sh*t load of silicone to seal the bell housing to the block. I had to use a rubber hammer and pry bar to break it loose.

Everyone I have worked on had RTV on it also.

maybe I'm the fool- I thought the cover was "supposed" to NOT have a gasket?

That's correct -- no gasket. Another possiblility is that the red material is Loctite 518 (an anerobic sealant that is a better choice for close-fitting, metal-to-metal joints than RTV IMO). You probably will just have to get a little "physical" to break the bond whatever you have.

That is what I use is Loctite 518. Works great. No it doesn't have a gasket but what I was referring to was caking of rtv. When it is caked on you have to be very careful when seperating the cover from the case.

I use a high heat copper gasket sealer, a very thin layer, it all it takes. All you are doing is keeping the dust and dirt out of there. No need to go overboard.
