Yeah, I know the last thing you want to hear is another American is coming to visit your beautiful Country, but it is true.

Unfortunately it is not me but my friends 21 year old aughter - Now it is ok -ha-ha.

She will be visiting for College credits over 7 weeks - Her parents are not letting her take her cell phone for obvious cost control reasons. However, they want her to have a way to call the States when necessary.

Can you recommend what type of pre-paid phone card or other method that she should use to place calls back to home. Here in the USA they sell many types of cards but they are not always good for International calls or they charge high rates per minute.

Not trynng to be "cheap" but they asked me if I could help - So I am asking you locals for advise.

    Thanks,

    David C.

P.S. Thanks in advance for offers to "teach" her the Austrailan way -

no probs, send her this way if she's hot. my gf turns 21 in a few weeks and she's got a thing for yanks... not so much a thing for girls but hey perhaps the accent might overcome the slight anatomical incompatibility.... :D

as to the phone thing, there's loads of pre-pay phone cards, just walk into any convenience store and there's a million ads plastered all over for "3c per minute" blah blah blah.

Same thing here on the phone cards - but the fine print says a lot more for Internattional calls - higher per minute plus $4.00 per call just to connect.

Did not know what business people do for calling the US or those with family here.

I forgot to mention there will be a week in New Zealand also.

    Thanks

    Coming to Sydney ;) hehehe

Noprobs, she needs to goto a newsagency(sells newspapers, lotto, milk etc, every town has one or 3) they sell these prepaid cards, that cost $10AU. The she calls a local number(30c?) and then the company connects you to USA and the rates are even better than most local fone companies :) We use them all the time to call Italy(relos) and a $10 card gives you afew hrs worth of talking, Im sure the rates to USA is even cheap :)

Yup, this is the best way to do it. My wife spends hours on the phone to relatives in the USA and India using these things.

I send my mum an SMS before calling, asking whether I should infact call or not.....its cheaper and saves the akward conversation.
