I recently had one of my cars modified. This car has never been in an accident and had a clean carfax. The shop that I took it too for some reason unbeknownst to me reported damage/accident to CarFax. A fellow Fchat member recommended I run a CarFax report as this shop doesn't seem to know up from down. I'm glad I did, but I'm disappointed to find out that the value of my car has now been diminished because of this incorrect data.

Now I did have modifications done, but the car was perfect when I brought it to the shop and I was only 'improving' it to my liking. Has anyone dealt with CarFax before in correcting data? Any suggestions on how to get things resolved and removed? I see they have a form online, but I would rather speak with someone live to explain the circumstances.

I have had an unsuccessful experience with CarFax about a year ago, trying to remove incorrect data for a client with an older Porsche. It said that airbags deployed in an accident his car had, but for the model year of the Porsche they didn't even make airbags. I tried to my best to explain and send them links on Porsches to show that airbags didn't exist in his car to begin with so it wasn't possible that they deployed. CarFax didn't change the report though.

I have already contacted the body shop owner and he is playing dumb & clueless. :(

Body shops don't usually report anything to car fax... why would they?

    Usually its insurers, and cops...

Something in this story sounds off...

Don't worry about the carfux scam. It's about as legit as three-card-monty, but with really good marketing. They guarantee their results, unless they're wrong - that should tell you something.

If it's any consolation, I ran the little quicky free carfux on one of my cars years ago, when I was thinking about selling it, just to see what the initial report looked like that most people get. Apparently, this car, which was a special-order, built for me, "...HAS 6 INCIDENTS REPORTED..... If that little scare-tactic doesn't either make a potential buyer run for the hills (most likely), or preferably, buy the upsell full-information package, they're brain dead.
Since there were no accidents, incidents, or anything to report, I paid the fee to find out that each of those "incidents" was referring to things like the title transfers at port, distribution, dealer, me, inspections.......the mundane stuff, not "the front end was knocked-off several times, aren't ya glad ya paid us for this information the seller wouldn't tell you about?!?!?"

They've lost all credibility with anyone but the most gullible for tactics like this - I'm not the only one to call them on this, and unless they've changed drastically (to the detriment of their business model), they're not going to change your "Valuable Information About This Car". They don't care.

Good luck fixing carfax. At one point for a PO the dmv said my testarossa had 115,000 miles (HA HA) instead of 15,000. Didn't show up until dealer went to sell...good luck to me ever getting that cleared up, didn't even try...

It's what they do......because they can, and they can because people don't know any better.

There's more to the story but I've been advised not to publicize the details until all has been resolved. For the time being I'm trying to research as much as I can. Basically I want to know what I need to show carfax there was no accident. I have receipts of what was done and am hoping that will suffice. I just don't want to waste my time through the online form if it's not the best option.
