I can appreciate and certainly support capitalism. Being able to think of something or do something and make money at it - for some, LOTS of money - is a beautiful thing. I think it's wonderful when someone comes up with some crazy-sounding idea and makes it work and reaps huge profits. Sure money isn't everything, but it makes a lot of dreams come true. How could you not be in favor of that...?

But there really is something to be said for ethics. The pathetic scum bags who make spyware and adware and profit from other peoples' subsequent troubles due to said programs, should be drawn and quartered. They should be pelted with semi-hardened molten rock. They should be tarred and feathered. They should be pushed down a long slide of razor blades into a big pool of alcohol.

NNO I completely agree with you. I had problems with this Spysheriff junk earlier this year. I had to reformat my computer, and lost all my files (didnt have back up disks...I learned the hard way there). Since I reformated my Computer I went to Staples and bought the Mcafee package. It works really well, I have yet to have anything get on my computer.

LOL, you couldn't even if you tried... :)

Dino, that's very unfortunate, I'm sorry to hear that. Now I feel like a bit of a tool. So far, nothing's been lost here, except for some time. All files are still in tact - hell, it wasn't even my computer! It's just such a pain-in-the-ass thing to have to spend time working on. We're running Norton here and that seems to be keeping things in check.

you dont need to format your hard drive to get rid of spy sheriff or any form of spyware softwre like that. Google spysheriff remover and go to www.bleepingcomputers.com shows you how to do it with safe freeware stuff.

Not knowing a lot about pc's, I have Ad-adaware software by Lavasoft also Aol Spycheck, when I do a search, Ad-adaware always finds stuff but Aol hardly ever does, is one a lot better or does one only search for certain things

In my limited experience, AOL's spy sweeping software isn't very good. It came on my Gateway laptop and is good for scanning and getting rid of tracking cookies without being system-intensive like other spyware-killers, but that's about it. Ad-Aware is great for a free spyware killer.

I use Ad-Aware, but I also use Webroot's "SpySweeper." You have to pay for it (at least, the functional versions...you can sweep for free, just not remove spyware), but it found a lot of things that Ad-Aware didn't. It also blocks most of the crap from getting on the computer in the first place if you leave it running in the background with all the shields on.

your local pc shop are idiots..... I would have been able to fix your computer in 30 minutes of that crap. In any case, it's easier for them to format your hard drive then fix the problem correctly.

I a network engineer. I deal with this crap on a daily basis, so I semi know what im doing. and the fact that I have saved 7 laptops from this crap. I dont think the vp of sales would be happy if i told him I had to format his hdd beause of spyware. :)
